Do you define yourself by the things you own and consume?

I see many people that want to be defined by the brand of clothes they wear. They buy shirts that have the brand names displayed all over their clothing. Actually I don't know if you can by brand clothing without their being their corporate logo all over it. You see kids that need to buy 'Nike', right? "Mom, I won't be cool unless I own Nikes." Already our kids are being brainwashed into this consumer culture. They got all these advertisements for children during cartoon hour telling them what brands of food they need. You hear slogans from burger joints like White Castle, "What you crave." They're telling your kids what they crave. Instead of being good parents and telling them no and making a healthy well balanced meal, parents lazy and go and buy this junk food instead of being responsible adults. If that's not all, all the athletes are endorsing things like Gatorade, Red Bull, and Monster other energy drinks that are unhealthy. I didn't mean to make this all about children because once we're grown up were pretty much acting the same way. We all go to certain stores like goth kids have their hot topic. We're defining ourselves by brands. Do you agree or disagree?

Yes, I do agree with you. These days even my 9 years old son is becoming brand conscious. He is fully aware that branded clothes are costlier. But he knows that I always go by my budget and buy clothes during sale period so he waits for the sale season to come. At the moment his desire for branded things is not hurting me because his size shoes at Bata store cost around 700-800 and nike sandals at 50% off cost me Rs.900/- So spending one or two hundred more to get branded item is not a bad bargain. But I just hope that he never demands branded things at full price. That I will not be able to afford.
