One Huge Problem!!!!  email this discussion to a friend?

I have one very large and valid concern about the healthcare debaucle congress is trying to pass. When I look at the classified ads for just my local paper (town of less than 100K) there are two professions that anyone can go get a job doing immediately if they are qualified. Those are truck drivers and nurses! Truck driver ads take up about 30% of the classifieds and nurse ads about 40 and I'm sure in the big cities like NY, LA, Dallas ETC. the percentage is the same. Also, I have a small heart condition which my cardioligist monitors annually but to get an appointment I have to make it for the next year before I leave to be sure to get in! Again, this is in a small market! I believe anyone would agree that America has a dangerous shortage of medical professionals so here is my question:

Given the present shortage of medical professionals, how does the president and congress even pretend to be able to introduce 40 million plus people into an already overburdened system in the next 4 years without bringing it to a complete collapse?

The president and congress want to assure people that there will be no rationing but this "new" system will start behind and will never catch up! Your thoughts??

I really think if there was more incentive financially for medical professionals to go through the education system there would not be a shortage and perhaps the expeses would go do for us all. Torte reform would also help so we can get rid of malpractice law suits that are often friverlous. I agree, the system of change they are calling for is never going to work. I do believe there is a dire need for change however. I would like to see less pharmaseudical influence on decision making. I think the markups on drugs are huge and they should be help accountable for keeping costs low for consumers. Also, I think there needs to be more incentive for people to access nartural medicine. My insurance does not cover anything natural. I have to pay out of pocket for any of this and they often cure my ailments better then any drug to mask the symptoms!

Jodylee,

I agree that tort reform has to be a very large part of the re-working of our healthcare system. While I agree that drug prices are high I would rather deal with the high prices for a few years while the drug companies recouped their investments than have the drug companies stop researching for new drugs and cures due to no ability to make a profit. It's a real catch-22! Either we pay for the research with high prices or do without the new and innovative drugs and cures.

Too true with the research piece! I agree completely. It is a catch-22. I really wonder though how much is actually spent on the research. Is there a governing council to it? I should do a little more research of my own so I can speak a little more inteligently about the subject. Thanks for reminding me of that point!

This problem has been my concern for many months. It is not only the doctors and nurses that will be in short supply, but the equipment, the hospitals, the staff etc. Nurses were in short supply for more than five years. Do people realize how much a doctor depends upon his nursing staff?

If you want quality health care, you need quality medical professionals. Where will they come from? Will their be a huge influx of medical professionals from overseas? How will their credentials be verified? Lots of questions are left unanswered, not just 'how will it be paid.'

myLot reputation of 48/100. rodney850 (931)   ranked 456 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

Quiplet,

You are so right! The logistics are going to be as big of a nightmare as the shortage of doctors and nurses. The Obama administration and democratic congress want to oversimplify this drastic undertaking and I believe they underestimate the general intelligence of America. America is intelligent enough to see this for what it is and that is a rushed, poorly planned bill to let Obama say he gave us universal healthcare. Nothing could be further from the truth!

There WILL be rationing.... and the plans are already in place.

Ezekiel Emmanuel and Tom Daschle are 2 of the individuals contributing heavily to this healthcare scam, and they both plan on rationing healthcare i order to save money.

Not only will the quality of healthcare decrease, the price of it will go up.

If anyone truly believes otherwise, they are delusional... and not understanding the true picture.

myLot reputation of 74/100. Koriana (165)   ranked 141 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

there is already selective rationing!!! that is being indirectly admitted in the opining piece....
we don't have enough medical staff, our lines will be too long, ect. ect....if we help the little lady in the wheelchair with her drug costs, allow the man with the brain damage to remain in the hospital a little longer, ect.....

so, what is really being said is that yous want the rationing....for your convenience.
as far as what kind of jobs are in our paper, seems to me, whereever the gov't decides to throw their money, that's where the jobs are!!! and, they throw alot of money at the healthcare profession.

as far as the staff not getting paid enough???
ummm...sorry, no, a nurse with far less experience is now getting paid considerably more than a journeyman machinist with a lifetime of experience! I know the nurse, I know the machinist!

Koriana ... Frankly... I think you are a liar. Your words are unimportant and you have nothing useful to say.

I think you make things up as you go along.

Also, it is considered very rude to comment on someone's response when you leave no response of your own... that's a hit and run tactic that is all too typical of a coward... which is what you are.

Finally... just like Comrade 0bama got told the other day .... YOU LIE!

Ignored...

well, here in canada we have a social medical system and i am sure glad we do. my hubby is out of a job right now and before, he didnt have health coverage so if we would have gotten sick, we would have been out of luck.
the bad points are (you are right) there are not enough doctors to go around and wait times are horrendous, but you take the bad with the good.

You raise an interesting question and one I've not seen before and don't know the answer though am not convinced there is such a shortfall. However, I'll first do some research and come back and offer you an answer rather than just jump in here without facts to support.

You got it all wrong. There is not ONE huge problem. There are so many problems that have not been addressed. We have never had enough doctors. The people that are not covered just suffer in silence and die from non-treatment. They can't afford to go to the doctor so they don't. They wait until they get really sick and head for the emergency room. That is why a lot of our trauma hospitals have closed.

General practitioners don't get paid very well. The money is in specialty medicine, so there are not enough general practitioners. Even you, with your established doctor, have to make an appointment well in advance. If you are a new patient, you may have to wait six months. I experienced that. Go to emergency and you will wait as much as 18 to 24 hours unless you go by ambulance.

The only thing the health care reform will do is ensure that health care is affordable for all American citizens and no one will go bankrupt or be denied care because they don't have money. It does not address how your care will be administered. We still have a long, long way to go.

Insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, doctors, hospitals, and the entire medical profession have been handed 300 million customers on a silver platter. Who else stands to gain so much from free enterprise. It is time for them to step up to the plate and come up with a plan for taking care of this gold mine. Insurance and pharmaceutical companies have taken advantage of the American public for so long, that I am sure they find it difficult to think in honest terms. Doctors and hospitals are as much the victims as are the patients.

Yes, reform is needed all around. Congress's health care reform is just a drop in the bucket.

myLot reputation of 48/100. rodney850 (931)   ranked 456 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

StarBright,

Yes, we have a huge problem! I don't disagree that our current system has it's problems but not to the extent of scrapping the entire system for one that will work even worse! There are so many things that need to be addressed beforethe insurance issue it's not even funny! What good is insurance if there is no place to use it, or no doctors to treat you or not enough medicine? Out of the 40+ million the president and congress say we need to insure about 30 percent or 10 to 12 million of them qualify for benefits that already exist! Why not get them on the roles and insured before we totaly dismantle what we already have? Another 8 to 10 percent of those 40 million or 3 to 4 million elect to not to have coverage because in their minds they don't need it. Should they be forced to have it at the expense of everyone else? Then there are the about 8 million illegal aliens who are also included in the 40 million which don't deserve any coverage. No, I'm not inhumane but if they want coverage let them do what it takes to become legal and start paying taxes like the rest of us. The bill that congress is trying to shove down our throats is wrong on so many levels it defies explanation!

myLot reputation of 94/100. StarBright (1429)   ranked 872 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

The bill already states that illegals are not covered. What the bill does not say is how you ensure they don't get the coverage anyway. I sent an email to the president at www.whitehouse.gov and told him that I wanted to see a clause in there that states all citizens must prove their citizenship. If that is a concern of yours, I advise you to do the same. If he hears from the voters directly, I think he will get the message. I also checked the box that said I wanted to hear back from him. Every citizen that has a concern about this healthcare reform bill should read it for himself and address their concerns directly to the president. It is obvious that so many people involved have other agendas. Unless you read that bill for yourself, you will not know what to believe.
