I have been hearing from friends, family members and ads on my tv about cell phone companies that send you a free cell phone with free minutes on it every month if you are low income. My daughter started school recently and since I have no car I get rids from friends from time to time. I always worry about my daughter because of her epilepsy and such. I have been called many times over the past two years when she is in school due to falling and hitting her head or just getting sick. SO I decided to check out this free cell phone thing, that way I could be tracked down. I came across Safelink and filled out all the questions and was given this reference code to come back and check to see if I qualified. I did and they sent me the phone in 3 days. It has 71 minutes on it and I will get 71 minutes put onto it at the beginning of every month. It is just for emergencies and that is all I need. So has anyone else used of these types of programs? Do you know anyone that needs this?

Yeah I have heard of this before. I thought it was for the elderly though. That is a great thing for you to have. I`m so glad you qualified. Now at least they can call you if your needed.

I never heard the news before. i checked your profile and i know maybe it just happened in usa. In the uk if you register in a service provider with particular contract you can get free mobile phone too. i just got one nokia 6303 from orange company free. it is stylish and was on market in last spring. so it's not too bad.

Maybe it is only US. The phone isn't all that fancy but I can not be too upset about it as it is free and I get free minutes. Us beggars can't be choosers.

The program is good and bad. For ppl that really need it, it can be a good thing but there are those that will do it just for the free phone even if they don't really need it. I know a couple who lived in a state that had a simular program, they moved and gave the phone to a relative and he doesn't need it. I don't know where the funding comes from to pay for all the free phones and minutes but I would bet it's from taxpayers and if it was, that would tick me off. I agree but with my phone the Safelink you only have it for 1 year. Then you must return it. I have until November then I have to return the phone in the box I got it in. I agree though about if other programs don't do this.

Do your research people. These phones are NOT PAID by taxpayers. Never have been...and they have nothing to do with Obama, etc. This plan was actually started back during the Reagan administration and it is funded by corporations, mostly phone companies.

Hey Angie, As a matter of fact I have a free safelink phone. I've had it for months. The main thing is to make sure it is on when it's time for your minutes to be loaded. I have 750 mins. because I never use it. That may change soon. I have my own cell phone and I spend a lot of time on it with Doctors and all kinds of reasons due to our situation. I'm really glad you got one. I'm especially glad that you did a post on it so more people will know about. Nice work!! Leenie

So does the minutes carry over each month if you don't use them? A friend was asking me that and I have no idea because I just got it. The only downside is the fact that the cell number is an Ohio one and I live in Michigan.

Do you think they will change it for me? Or will they have to send me a whole new phone? I get so nervous talking to people I don't know on the phone. Funny I can do it online without any problems.

Yes the minutes do carry over. Just call and ask them about the number and area code.

That's interesting I had never heard of this before. I've heard of programs where if you are a victim of domestic violence they will give you a donated cell phone to use just to call 911 but they have no minutes. That's awesome that this is available for people. I don't know anyone that needs one off hand but if I find someone now I know where to send them. Thanks for sharing this.

It's okay. I've used it before when I was having trouble receiving calls on my cell phone with ATT. They are good as far as just to have a phone. You really don't get an upgraded phone. It's more of a prepaid bottom line phone. you have to reapply every few months but other than it works okay for someone just needing to make calls.
