Need some Child bed time advise.  email this discussion to a friend?

brandykae (9) 3 years ago

I have boys ages 3,4 and 5. We are having a hard time with bed time. It seems to be a fight every night no matter what we try. When we do get them to bed at sometime during the night they seem to wander into our bed. If any one has any advise on getting kids to bed at a decent time and to avoid the fight I would certaily like to here it. Once we get them to bed its I am hungry...I need a drink and just plain yelling that they are not going to bed. We have tried time outs. laying with them. Drink and food before bed (which I know is not a good habit) but we are getting desperate. My 5 yr old goes to bed great and the other 2 just will not settle down. They no longer nap so I thought that would help but it seems not too. Please help!

Have you tried reading bedtime stories to them? Soft music in the background. This works for my grandson sometimes. It can be calming.

We have tried this to. The stories just end up with one more.......The music works if they are really really tired.

Hello happy Have you tried using a reward scheme for good behaviour? As you already have one child that goes to bed without any problem it might help. If you make each a reward chart with slices of pie type shapes, if they go to bed on time and go to sleep they get a slice of the pie. When the pie is full they get a treat such as a meal out, trip to the park , whatever you would like to do. If they earn a 'slice' but are naughty the next night, that slice gets taken away. As you have one child that sleeps ok you could give them a slice for that or for any good behaviour. It tends to work better than telling them off as it encourages them to behave and most kids are competitive to a point so they will want to earn a slice rather than being told what to do and when to do it and play up. happy

That is a great idea. We have done a reward program before but never on paper that could be the thing that would work. My five year old that goes to well is deaf so he does not hear the other ones argue about going. He would probably follow suit if he did. Thanks

Thank you for BR happy I hope it works for yours as it did with mine. It takes patience sometimes as it doesn't work overnight but it is worth the effort and time. At least you know your 5 year old will not be woken in the night by them and he's probably a lot better for a good night's rest and sleep. happy

I've had to start the bedtime process a few hours before bedtime rolls around. Like two hours before bed need to get pj's on, then another 1/2 hour start turning down the lights. Smaller children over sensatize and found that if I slow the house down for them and create a quiet atmosphere then they can bring themselves down easier. I make sure video games are up and any activity they do would be like puzzles or even play dough because it's a calming excersize.

Sometimes maybe put in a movie real quiet and let them sit in a rocking chair with their favorite blanket or stuff animal so they get the comfort feeling.

There isn't anything wrong with snuggling on the couch and if they start a pattern for bedtime they will come to like the quiet time and that time with you sitting with them.

I know it is harder to get things done around the house but setting a pattern for them is the key and it can be a reward too. I've even gave them choices do you want a movie before bed or a bed time story and they accpet it.

Whatever you try it's going to take time. These things can take weeks before you get it down, but the main key is the more quiet that surrounds them the calmer and more relaxed they get so they can shut down their bodies to go to bed.
