Is the state too involved in parenting issues... |
|
I was watching the news that a woman in Michigan is being told by the State Department she cant watch her friends children an hour each day before school because she doesnt have a license for day care. WHAT? Are you serious? According to the department of social services someone in the neighborhood complained that she was running an unlicensed daycare. All this woman is doing is watching her friends children for an hour in the a.m. so they dont have to wait for the bus alone for a period of time. Dont neighbors have anything better to do? WHat was the problem? She didnt offer to watch their kids? I have helped my friends many times. I think this is exactly what happens when people butt into other peoples lives for no reason other than they have nothing better to do. If one of those children get hurt or kidnapped because they are left alone for an hour each morning the state would be blaming the parent for neglect. Now they make responsible arrangements and still their being punished. DO you agree with this?

1. ShirleyBillingsley (899) | 3 months ago | I saw a similiar case in Texas. Someone reported the woman for keeping so many children, and she was "supposedly" getting her liscense for keeping those children. The truth is, they were doing drugs in the house, while the children were there. Sometimes the kids were outside, with an older child watching them. Another case that i personally witnessed, was "supposedly" neighbors watching neighbors kids, and i arrived on the scene, where the boy had his pants down, the girls were having a good laugh of it, until they saw me. The truth is, in that situation, a ten year old girl was left alone, to watch nine children, while the parents of both sets, went off to have a fun day of shopping. I sort of ended that little spree, of each having their fun. One set of those parents, happened to have been my own child. Angrily, i informed them of what could have happened if social services had arrived, before i did. A concerned neighbor had called me, and i arrived within a few minutes. There are more and more of these same set of circumstances happening every day. No i don't approve of someone keeping a lot of kids, even if it is just the neighbor, because i have seen on several occasions, what can, and often times, does, happen.

rmorefield (784) | 3 months ago | I agree with you that there needs to be a safe child-to-adult ratio. Kids are kids, and they will do things that they shouldn't. That's what we're here for as adults. That is horrible that the woman in Texas was doing drugs in the house while the kids were there. You know, I agree with the poster that sometimes people should mind their own business if it is obvious that no harm is being done. But in these cases you pointed out, I say "Good For The Neighbors!!!" You can usually tell is someone is just being nosy, or if there is an honest problem.

2. rmorefield (784) | 3 months ago | It sounds to me like people need to worry about their own lives. At the same time, it just sounds like we are hearing her side of the story. If she was just babysitting for an hour or so in the morning, then she shouldn't have any problems. But it sounds like someone actually had some kind of proof against her. Even so, as long as the kids are safe and happy, I don't see why the state should step in. The only thing I can think of is the child-to-adult ratio. I know that here in Virginia, you are allowed to babysit only so many kids at a time before you have to apply for a daycare license. I really can't say this is true in this particular situation because I haven't seen the newscast. Anyway, now that I am finished rambling, I agree with you. People should butt out, even though I can kind of understand it if the kids were causing problems in the neighborhood such as vandalism. But I don't think that is the case here.

dloveli (1004) | 3 months ago | It does sound like some neighbors have too much time on their hands. I must tell you though that it wasnt just her side they reported on. They also had the state representative, the department of child welfare, and three neighbors, two of which had their children being watched by the woman. It wasnt a situation where a woman is just venting. I imagined myself in their situation. What the big deal is I have no Idea. There are only 3 children involved. One of which is the woman who is babysitting so it clearly isnt a case of too many children. I feel that the state is interfering on a parents choice of whom they decide will watch their children. Thanks for responding and Happy MyLotting. dl

rmorefield (784) | 3 months ago | I read the news story last night. Now that I know a little more about the case, I think that people need to mind their own business!! This woman wasn't even doing what I would consider to be babysitting. I am so glad that I don't live in that state. At least here, I can leave my children with someone I trust and not have to worry about if they have a license or if they are going to be keeping more kids than mine. I have four kids, 12, 8, 20 months, and 6 months. They are enough for anyone to keep. I have a babysitter that has been with me since my oldest was born. I just don't trust anyone else to watch them. We have to be so careful who we leave our babies with. I think that the state needs to reword their law. I don't think that babysitters should have to go through what a daycare does, like paying taxes. I mean, they don't charge near the money that a daycare does, and my babysitter doesn't make me bring the kids' food with them. She gives them food out of her own refrigerator. I know how expensive that is for her. My kids can eat. I like the way it works here in Virginia. The only time you have to have a daycare license is if you 1)make so much money per year and 2)have a certain number of kids that you take care of on a regular basis.

3. Lakota12 (17139) | 3 months ago | No I think the mom that needs this other woman to watch kids cause she has to go to work at that time should be allowed too. How is it a day care when its only an hour. I just HATE busybodies!

dloveli (1004) | 3 months ago | That's exactly how I feel! What gets me is that there are so many more serious issues involving children that need to be addressed. So many children are in danger and here they are worrying about a woman who is keeping other people's children out of danger and she is being punished. Where is the justice?

4. AngryKittyMSV (1871) | 3 months ago | Another nail in the coffin of Liberty, thanks to the nanny-staters who think it's the government's business to micromanage every aspect of our lives. What's next? If you carpool with your neighbor and take their kids to school with your own will they now say you need a livery license?

dloveli (1004) | 3 months ago | I still cant believe that all the neglected and abused children's cases have been put on hold so they can harass a woman who is nice enough to watch her friend's children, for free, so that they wont be left alone each morning while the parents are at work. What a monster that woman is!! NOT!!! R U serious? Michigans child welfare organization is a joke. You can abuse em but you cant watch them for free. ABSOLUTELY ABSURD!!!dl

dloveli (1004) | 3 months ago | Well said Ambie! I think that the department of child welfare should be embarassed. All the other crazy stuff going on in the world involving children and they pick this to enforce. And whomever called on her, Has way too much time on their hands and is a big as* Troublemaker. dl

7. cyrus123 (1753) | 3 months ago | It sounds like to me that this woman was being neighborly and trying to help her friends. People can be so nosey, can' they? I have to deal with nosey people all the time, too, but I guess we all do. I just wish people would mind thir own business, myself. She must have been looking after a lot of kids if the person thought she was running an unlicensed day care center. Still, what business is it of theirs? Kathy.

9. 3SnuggleBunnies (3443) | 3 months ago | That's a dirty shame! I would be utterly po'd on if someone did this to me!
The fear of some sicko hurting my kids is why I am just driving them to school until 2 of them are on the bus togeather. However I will stay at the bus stop with them as we live near a busy intersection and someone could just shove them in a car and disappear in the traffic or they could run into the road and get hurt. Sadly it takes 2minutes to get to school & they don't come to get her til like 5min before the bell rings!! She likes the time to hang out with her friends. ANd if they did door to door pick up seeing where we are located I'd be ok with it but they don't.

10. Shaun72 (11884) | 3 months ago | That sounds crazy. I mean why does she need to open a daycare center whe she is only watching her friend's kids for a hour. I tell you people do need to mind their own lives. If she had hurt a child I could see complaining or calling it in.I think some people have nothing better to do with their lives.
