Jobs - this is too strct. What do you think? | | A co-worker that I work with had a son get out of the hospital recently. When they went to pick him up they found out that he was to have an appt with a specialist 2 days later. So her husband called his supervisor while driving home from the hospital to see if he could get off work to take his son to this appt. (which is a 3 hour drive away). His supervisor said ok. When he got to work the next day they told him he would be getting a point against him for taking that day off. You get 3 points against you and you get fired. I don't feel that this is right. Granted it is hard to get people to fill in for you on a short notice but this is for medical reasons. When a specialist says to come in you do it because otherwise it will take you two months to get an appt. And if you are seeing a specialist you have something more wrong with you than the common cold. I just think that this is too strict. Give the guy a verbal warning maybe but not a point. What do you all think??

DId he talk to his employer about it and ask why the point in this case... serious medical can't give notices! He might also check with the local Labor Board and Unemployment office to see what the state laws are concerning this... They are there we just don't know about them. The Labor Board watches out for the employeess like a Labor Union does for members. For instance... in California, if your salary is cut 30% or more, you can legally quit and collect unemployment. I had to do that once as they were just cutting me every which way and expecting me to stay cause they knew my hsuband wasn't working and I needed the job. So I quit under those terms, and won the hearing for my unemployment hands down and they charged the employers reserve account for doing this to cause me to have to file for unemployment. I think many employers these days are taking advantage of the high unemployment to "keep" people. They know people can't find other jobs, so they think they can (and do) do what they want and the employees will stay. And the employees do... so much for those job gurus who say "give 110% to the employer... you'll get "thanked" at raise time"... yeah, spoken just like someone that has never had a job!!! I would suggest your friend document every single thing that goes on in this case....might not need it, but if something does happen, he has the issues right there and doesn't have to go back and try to remember things. My motto - better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!
