I am sitting for my parents this week and they have a twelve year old Shepard Husky mix. Over the past couple of years he went from a healthy 75 lbs (he's very tall) to all skin and bones. He literally looks like he's starving. The food they have him on is Iams. I have tried to get her to switch to a better food like Royal Canin or some other high protein food, but she won't do it because her Vet said Iams was one of the best foods. I guess for a commercial food it is, but in researching for our Boston Terrier it was a real eye opener. So anyway, she feeds this dog dry food in the morning with vitamins crushed into it, a fish oil compound for his skin and coat, and ensure (yes the dietary supplement ensure for people) Then in the evening he gets a can of Iams with a pro biotic powder And at some point during the day I have to give him a joint compound pill. With all of this I would think the dog wouldn't look like he just escaped Auschwitz! I need help, I've got him for 10 days, it's not enough time to do a complete food change over, but if anyone's got suggestions I'm open to them. And can someone please confirm if Ensure is ok for dogs?
