Rude people at the library

My sister just told me something that was really crazy and I thought I'd share it. She was at the public library a few days working on an essay when this complete stranger came up to her table and started badmouthing her. He was telling her that she was bad because she was ditching school (the incident occurred around noon but my sis is a college student and didn't have class at that time). He even went so far as telling her to get out of the library (in a rude way) because she was loitering. I don't know how that works since she was doing her work and minding her own business. I just thought that this was really messed up. The guy had no rights to say any of that stuff to her. I was kind of disappointed when she told me that she didn't do anything. I would have at least mentioned this to one of the librarians or something. But, what is up with people these days?

Hi Saizo6, that was crazy! You would think that at a library, people would notice someone harassing your sister. I have to think your sister was probably so shocked that someone would bother her at a library that she didn't say anything but I definitely would have said something to the librarian because maybe he was just going around and bothering people. The other thing that struck me as funny, was that even if your sister was ditching school, I'm sure there would be worse places for her to be than a LIBRARY (hello?). Plus, really what business was it of his unless he was a truancy officer. Was your sister scared, did the guy seem like a maniac, in my mind, the library is one place that I can't imagine getting harassed at. Maybe the next time she goes to the library she should mention it the librarian. I am right with you in wondering how rude/wacked that guy was. Perhaps mental illness?

Hi linamachina, thanks for the response. I know what you mean. My first thought after hearing this was "Why would anyone want to play hooky and go to the library?" There are so many better places to choose from after all. And I have no idea what was up with the guy. I go to the same library twice a week and I've never encountered that before. She said the man was pretty old so maybe it was one of those mean old men who like to make younger people's lives miserable. There are a bunch of those around here.
