Growing your own

I have recently move out to my house in Bulgaria, and in keeping with the rural Bulgarians I am going to be growing as many of my own vegetables as I can. I have managed to grow a few things this year, but I will be setting up a full allotment next year. I am looking for any tips any experienced gardeners can give a novice? One problem I had this year was caterpillars eating my brassicas - any tips on home made pesticides. I want everything to be as organic as possible so any advice would be appreciated.

crushed egg shells. Caterpillars, slugs etc have a hard time crossing them, they slice em. And the egg shells are good for your soil!

Wow that sounds like a really good simple trick. Its too late to save this years crop but I will definately try this next year. The egg shells will probably hel keep the weeds down too. One thing I was surprised by was how much weeding I have had to do!
