Snowmen and a stranger

My daughters and I were outside making snowmen, while we waited for my husband to get home from work. My oldest daughter was struggling with a really big ball of snow that she was trying to roll, while I finished helping my youngest with hers. I was startled when a man who was walking by, offered to help my oldest. Before I could form a response, he placed his things on the sidewalk and proceded to help her. I wasn't too concerned as I recognised him as someone who lived a few houses away, and my husband was due to arrive any second. Has something like this ever happened to you? What did you do? Should I have asked him to leave? I was a little uncomfortable, but I wasn't sure what I should have said or done.

that's a hard one. You want your kids to not be afraid of people, but you also want to be wary because he could be a predator. I don't think I would have stopped them, but I definatly would have kept a very close eye on what was going on, or ushered the kids into the house - tackfully if it got really strange. Your neighbor may have just been trying to be nice. I would keep a closer eye on the neighbor for a while, if there doesn't seem to be anything else that sends up a red flag then he was just being neighborly. If he seems to be hanging around a little too much for comfort or just happens to be all the places at the same time you are, then you might want to worry. I'm sure you discussed this with your husband when he got home too. And of course you want to be sure your kids understand that just because he's a nice man that helped with the snow doesn't mean he's a trusted friend and they should tell you immediately if he tries to talk to them.

I would've asked him to leave. Child predators try all kinds of tricks to get close to children and this sounds like a perfect setting for this to happen. I could be wrong but I wouldn't take the chance.
