they think by calling it xmas that then you won't get offended because they don't know what holiday you observe and thing is if they would ask you what holiday you observe for that season then they wouldn't be offending anyone when you tell them merry christmas or happy hannauka and sorry for this mispelling. but I think most are just afraid to offend someone if they say christmas because a lot observe the holiday but not for that reason. hope you get what you are looking for.

Hello friend,
"X" stands for unkown number,it is becoz, the catholic church doesn't really know the exact date when CHRIST was born.
If we read the Bible about Jesus being born in jerusalem,it is not during winter...but it falls in summer time.

A friend of mine asked me the same question. He is a mathematics teacher and understands X in the xmas as "unknown factor". He said he doesn't understand why use an unknown factor. He was wrong in his understanding. X in xmas is actually a greek equivalent of chi the first letter in the word christ. So xmas is only a shortened form of christmas.
cheers!

X is used as a short hand for Christ. Traditionally, X is actually a Greek symbol for Chi which is the first letter for the Greek word Christos or Xristos. Eventually the character lost its meaning and is now treated as a way of disrespect for Christ. I still use Xmas though because I know the real meaning of the X in it. :D
