Cockatiels |
|
My youngest daughter was given two cockatiels ..poor things look like vultures.I use to raise cockatiels and have never seen them look like these two. They have no feathers at all on their heads or their necks. I need a little advice about them. How do I get them to stop picking? If anyone has any advice for me please share. They are mating as well, we are planning to make them a nest box to see if that might help. I will try just about anything if it will help them.

jeanena (832) | 2 months ago | My daughter is taking some pictures of them right now as soon as we can get some uploaded I will post them . What is safe to get rid of parasites in birds? I have never had to deal with that before.

vonmac (2108) | 2 months ago | What ever you do dont provide a nest box Have you seen them grooming each other and removing the feathers I never had to deal with parasites, but google might be able to help.

jeanena (832) | 2 months ago | yeah i have seen them picking and grooming each other. And they were mating last evening . We have had them 2 days now.

vonmac (2108) | 2 months ago | This might sound daft, but has the female ever laid eggs, Just curious because some young birds, males, often simulate mating, and it might explain the excessive grooming How old are they?

vonmac (2108) | 2 months ago | Hold on, I just had a thought, or rather that husband of mine did He is asking if the birds are Lutino Cockatiels. Lutino,s often take a lot longer to achieve full feathering, Just as well he is here to keep me right

jeanena (832) | 2 months ago | They are normal greys. I just called the mom of the girl we got them from . She said they have had them for 2 years . They had rescued them from some place where there were kids tomenting them. They have another one that has all her feathers . I would think if it was parasites that the other one would be scrappy looking too.

|
|
jeanena (832) | 2 months ago | Oh yeah from the way she talked they havent ever laid eggs yet.
| |
|
|
vonmac (2108) | 2 months ago | Well it sounds to me like you have got 2 over exuberant males, lol Take them to the vet and get them checked for a parasite If they had been distressed due to being tormented, the feathers would have growed back by now

2. gabs8513 (19410) | 2 months ago | Hi there Jeanena I think you might have to take them to the Vets as they sound like they have something called Mites which makes them do this But have a look in the Petshop first as I am sure you can get some Spray for it I only know this because I remember my Grandmothers Budgie got this ones (she used to bread them ) I hope you can get the poor things better Hugs to you

jeanena (832) | 2 months ago | Thanks Gabs. I will see what I can get done about looking for something. I know when we had the snakes we had to put some stuff their cages to keep the mites from them.

vonmac (2108) | 2 months ago | Never spray a bird with anything until you know what you are spraying!! Seriously bad idea,

|
gabs8513 (19410) | 2 months ago | That is why I said to get something for Mites, just ask at the Pet shop and show a Photo of the Birds and if not sure then ask the Vet

Thats what you said!!!
If it is a paparsite, it will be something like this one, its quite common and has spread to other types of pet birds as well, as people have become more prone to having multi specie avaiaries Myialges Nudus:
This mite is most commonly found on members of the brotogeris species (such as captive grey cheek parakeets). However, this mite has also been identified on other species of birds. Flies and lice may be involved in transferring these mites to other birds.
Myialges causes severe itching. Infected birds become very debilitated, lose feathers, suffer weight loss and develop red, scaly, thickened skin. If untreated, death occurs within several months.
Diagnosis is by clinical signs and identification of the mites in scrapings from the skin.
Infected birds are treated with Ivermectin.
We have over 100 birds in our aviary now, I think I know the protocol,
