got any advice?

I feel it is happening due to new teeth affairs. However, thats my feeling. I am not a doctor. Better you consult a pediatric dr for this.

Yes that's normal, you can ask his pedia for some oral ointment/gel for babies. My son's pedia gave him some oral gel but he doesn't like it and we gave him a teether and a pacifier (ask your dortor) to prevent him from putting his fingers/hands in his mouth. Ask your pedia for best solution.

Don't use drugs unnecessarily. One thing that worked for me was a wetting a washcloth in cold water and letting them chew on that. It's not so cold that they can't hold it (like a teething ring that was in the refrigerator or freezer), and gives them something soft to chew on for a bit of cool relief.

Make sure the washcloth is rinsed very well first, due to chemicals in laundry soap and fabric softener, etc. You don't want him to ingest something he shouldn't.
