When you look at Leonardos masterpiece, do you see her smiling or serious? There was some interesting news this morning regarding same. It seems that scientists have discovered that the reason she appears radiant one minute and serious the next is because our eyes are sending mixed signas to the brain about her smile. It appears that lighting as well as type of vision, (i.e. peripheral, centered) all effect wheather or not we see a smile. When asked in diVinci intended to sow so much confusion in the brains of viewers not to mention scientists, the answer was "Absolutely". Do you see a serious Mona or a smiling one?

I see both! its like a "wicked smile". Its like smiling from within, hahaha... I mean I don't now if Mona Liza really smiles like that...that time. Because its Da Vinci's interpretation of the image or the subject, if only Mona Liza knows how people of the new generation (highly digital age) got so intrigued with her smile..she maybe laugh at us and show how she really smile after all. I know scientist are making some studies about it for centuries. . .and still, its hypothetical. I think she doesn't have teeth or something..joke! Or maybe the word "cheese" is not yet popular back then. LOL. Happy Lotting!

I have a similar feeling like you.I feel confused when I saw the masterpiece. however I never tell anybody my confusion. because they would laugh at me. I agree I don't know art. I tried and tried to learn to appereciate these masterpieces. maybe my talent is not enough I still feel no clue with them. by the way so many people are interested in her smile, it proves it is really a great master piece. worth our attention any way.

I understand that people could see both a serious look as well as her smiling. Though I must admit that I tend to see her more as smiling than anything else. I prefer to see the positive side of things, which is probably why I see her more as smiling than her having a serious face. It's just the way that I'm use to things, I suppose.
