Would you Answer a Ringing Cellphone that isn't Yours? |
|
Well, if its a ringing land line phone, its bound to be answered if ever its ringing. Its like we have to answer it if its ringing, right? We don't know whose calling so we end up answering. We also don't know if the call is for us or someone else so we still have to answer the phone if its ringing just to make sure, especially when we are not expecting any calls on our part. Not really that complicating really.
Sometimes, I still find value with land line phones even though with today's age, every seems to have a cellphone of their own. With land lines, we have to follow a schedule or else, we might not be around to answer a call. Cellphones had made it really convenient, we can easily call anyone without worrying about the time. Typical land line phones won't be able to display who is calling while cellphones make it obvious.
So how about with cellphones? Let's say that the one who owns the cellphone is not around at the moment and someones calling. We'd know whose calling if the number is registered into their contacts. We also know whom they want to talk to since they are obviously calling the phone of the owner. Would you answer the call just to tell that the owner is not there or let it just ring since if the owner comes back, he or she would answer and if it doesn't get answered, its understood that the phone was not attended to.
Still, should we still answer a ringing cellphone that isn't ours?
Well, got to think about it.. what are your ideas about the matter?
Thank you for reading.

1. xannebull (1284) | 1 month ago | it depends, if it's from my mother's cellphone or a cellphone from my close friend. i would see who's calling him/her, if it was the person whom i know, then i would answer it, maybe the call is very much important. if the cellphone belongs to someday i don't know much, then i wouldn't answer it of course, because she/he might get angry.

ratyz5 (2964) | 4 weeks ago | Yes, xannebull, that is a very valid reason to answer and not answer a cellphone that isn't ours. However, there are cases wherein even if we know who seems to be calling by viewing the caller being displayed on the mobile phone's screen whenever there is an incoming call, even though its suppose to be them, perhaps another person is just using the phone. Well, that's a rare case these days anyway since most people would have their own mobile phones.
If its from someone we know and the one calling is also a person whom we know, I guess we could answer it, perhaps it is really urgent.

Yeah, if we know whose calling, we might as well answer the phone but, when its someone we don't know, we might end up hearing something we don't expect.
Now that you have mentioned it, if it keeps on ringing and ringing repeatedly, I might get this urge to answer the phone so that it won't have to ring again..(-_-")

It seems that you got used to answering your daughter's phone when its ringing, its like an ordinary phone to you maybe...?
Though its not something to worry about, answering someone's cell phone when its ringing seems to require to be answered in some cases.
Now that you have mentioned you only answer your phone, I guess there's no much hassle or it isn't a hassle to begin with.. depending on how your phone gets utilized.

| 4. snoopyfan (18) | 4 weeks ago | No I wouldn't answer the phone if it belonged to someone else. All cell phones have voice mail and I would just let voice mail pick it up. I wouldn't want someone answering my phone. It is a matter of respect to not only the phone owner but the person calling about something that isn't any of my business. I would let the person know when they came back that there was a call for them that they missed.

ratyz5 (2964) | 4 weeks ago | Yeah, some cell phones do have that feature.
However, here in our place, I guess only a few people use that feature on their mobile phones. I'm not even sure if they know that their phones have that kind of feature, I'm one of them actually (^_^")
Your right, a sort of respect for the owner as well as the one who is calling.
Thanks snoopyfan

5. astonysh (1824) | 4 weeks ago | Yes if the 'phone belongs to my wife, and she has forgotten to take it with her.
Yes if it is at work, and the mobile is used for work calls only (it might be an important business call needing immediate action).
Otherwise, no.

ratyz5 (2964) | 4 weeks ago | So you would only answer ringing cellphones that aren't yours if its your wife's or the one used at work.
You pretty much have less to worry about so it seems..

6. mommaj (1020) | 4 weeks ago | I wouldn't answer someone else's cell phone unless it is my husband's, or member of the family and the person calling is someone I talk to too, or if it is a close friends phone and only if the person that is calling is someone I know.
I've answered my folks' phone because I was the closest one to pick it up. I made sure the person knew it wasn't the owner of the phone because I didn't know who was calling. Sometimes you have to rely on instinct.

ratyz5 (2964) | 4 weeks ago | Yes, if it is of someone we know and we are sure that it would be okay for them if we answer their ringing cellphone, I think it would indeed be okay but, sometimes, even though we know whose calling, sometimes the content of the message might be something that we don't expect..
For times that I don't know whose calling, I mostly answer in english even though that's not the language we usually use here in our country.
Thanks for sharing, mommaj

| 7. rocketseance (45) | 4 weeks ago | I won't. I think cellular phones are personal properties. If someone is calling someone's cellular phone, they expect that person to answer the phone. It's not like with a landline where it could be for anyone in the house (or in the office, for that matter.) There are even times when the caller gets freaked out if someone else answers the phone instead of the person they're calling.
The idea of a cellular phone is that it should always be with you. SO I don't get the point of the cellphone ringing without the owner being able to answer it.
Besides, unlike landlines, cellphone calls are charged the moment you answer the phone. So, if you answer the call when the person they needed to talk to is actually not there, you effectively wasted their cellphone credits.
I just had enough times exclaiming,"What the heck is that person doing answering the phone?" to firmly say, NO YOU SHOULD NOT ANSWER SOMEONE ELSE'S CELLPHONE!

You really make it seem like your strongly against other people answering ringing mobile phones that are not their's. You have probably said what you mentioned in your post a couple of times when someone else answers the calls that you make, 'What the heck is that person doing answering the phone?'
Anyway, not most people would have the habit of keeping their cellphones close to them as if its a part of their body that they can't let go of. Who knows, taking a bath, sleeping, charging the phone's battery, are just a few reasons why people can't be always with their mobile phones.
Even though cellphones are considered to be direct ways to contact the specific person that you are calling, there are always chances that you won't get to talk to them immediately. That's why when someone answers to say that the person your calling is not there, not currently available or rather busy with something rather important, you get to know that and be informed perhaps when you can call again, rather than keep calling and calling, get to wonder why they aren't answering.
Of course they are busy, that's why they aren't answering. However, you'd still end up calling and calling since you don't know actually when to call back.
Anyway, I really don't fancy answering other people's mobile phones when they ring, be it at home or from people that I work with. Then again, I don't mind other people answering my phone in case it does ring and I am not around to answer it.

ratyz5 (2964) | 4 weeks ago | Your right, it would be really easy to answer a ringing mobile phone of someone that you live with than to answer a mobile phone of other people whom you don't know and perhaps get angry when they find out that another person answered their phone.
