Returning something at Wal-Mart...Is it really worth it?

I'm not sure if I missed some spectacular giveaway at the Wal-mart customer service desk this morning, but it sure looked like it. I went in there with the intention of returning an air mattress, but got so much more(including a glimpse of how other people live and this Gather post).
I was minding my onw business while the guy in front of me was actively engaged in trying to play roller hockey with his son (I presume) using the cart as a defensive tool.
Tangent: Whoever invented those stupid shoes with the skates on the bottom should be shot. I'm not old, I'm 27, and I think they're ridiculous and dangerous. If one more kid runs into me because they can't get their wheeled shoes stopped in time, I'm just going to casually throw and elbow and teach the kid(and parent) a lesson.
Moving on, dude in front of me in line had a massive vacuum in the car that was getting dangerously close to a cute old man with a cane in front of them. Right as I decided it was probably time to tell him he was being an idiot(and weighing my options of getting into an argument with a dude that looked roughly like Rodney Carrington), the man's wife(about an 80 year old woman), sees all this going on and asks the man if he would like to go ahead of them "since he was clearly in a hurry". The man took them up on the offer and the woman and I shared a glace conveying the thought "wow he's an idiot" silently.
For the first time in my life, I've been pleased at Wal-Mart's insanely strict return policy. After all of his antics, he was unable to return the vacuum because he had apparently ripped off some plastic piece to replace the part that he had broken on his own vacuum. In other words, he bought the vacuum, stole the parts he needed, then was attempting to return the vacuum. I guess he was hoping that they wouldn't take it out of the box when he went to return it.
Somehow, after all this, the air mattress I had was allowed to return to the shelf next to it's air mattress siblings and I got out of there unscathed. This leads me to my question.
Is returning something at Wal-Mart really worth it?
