Create your own edible arragement

I had this idea the other day while looking at sending someone an edible arrangement. For what you get, the price seems insane to me. Granted part of that is the delivery fee, but if you have to show up with something for holiday parties or another event, these would be a great alternative to a pie. I know most of us are looking for lighter options for the holidays and this seems like a pretty reasonable way to do it. Anyway, while I was making this yesterday, time was definitely of the essence so I didn't have time to be wandering around the produce section looking to see what looked good. I found the salad bar quite helpful as everything was already cut up and ready to go. I selected a bunch of fruit; cantaloupe and honey dew melons works great for this as well as pineapple and pretty much any fruit you like(kiwi does not work so well, just for reference). Also pick up one of those chocolate or caramel fruit dips that they hide either in the produce section or in the salad dressing aisle). After dumping about 2 pounds of fruit into a container, I dove down the baking aisle and found toothpicks and wooden grilling skewers. After checking out and running next door to the dollar store and picking up a random gift basket and a wad of the floral foam stuff(that's the technical term, I'm sure), I was ready to go). I cut the skewers to different lengths for variety and got to sticking them into the floral foam in a random, decorative pattern. In less than 20 minutes(dependent greatly on how close you live to your grocery store), I got in, got the fruit, skewered it all(decoratively of course), and was ready to go for a party. Obviously you could make this cheaper by cutting up your own fruit. I used a few more expensive things like figs and pomegranates to make it look "partyish", but any fruit you like will do. Even with all of the last minute prep(which you pay for), the whole thing still cost me less than $20, way less than the cheapest baskets at Edible Treats or whatever that place is called, but it's healthy(even if you eat the chocolate dip. Enjoy!
