A religious person may say to serve God. A capitalist may say to make money. Another person may say to help people. A mass murderer may say to kill as many as possible. A medical practitioner may say to find a cure for cancer..etc.
A friend of mine whose hopes of overcoming cancer looks very dismal said to me that he's set up his family and that was the purpose...I suppose - Meaning to me that he has more than that purpose and he desperately wants to live on and realise more of his purposes.
A crocodile wouldn't give a crap about human purpose, it would gobble us up regardless to satisfy it's own purpose.
Is the human purpose more important than a crocdile's purpose? Well something (usually) tells us humans that it is, and if you don't listen to it then you should try to swim with the crocodiles.
The purpose of humnans, who knows? Ours is not to question why, ours is but to do or die.

Religious teachings can help to bring out the best in a person as can many other writings IMO. But the "best" is still my impression of what the best is.
Most probably, it is the furtherment of the human race in a happy and enlightened form. There's also probably some conjecture in that purpose.

I can't say with total certainty that there are no colonies of pink bunnies living beneath the surface of mars either, but I'd suspect not.
