Street people email this discussion to a friend?

I have no problem with people living on the street. I do think it is a disgrace to the developing world that there are people living on the street and I feel sorry for these people. I understand that a lot of them are there because they feel they have no choice and the help they need is not there. But what about when one of those people walking the streets in your neighborhood is aggressive? There is one woman here who approached people and starts yelling in their faces and curses and threatens to hurt them. She approached my friend and I the other day and accused us of stealing her corner (she is obviously a strung out hooker) and started to threaten us. The police are aware that she and a few other aggressive street people are around and they are a danger to people who have to walk the streets like me when I have to walk home from work late at night. Why is nothing being done with these people? I don't feel safe walking home or going out with them around and no one does anything. Isn't there something that should be done to make the streets safe for the people who are law-abiding citizens? I realize she obviously has problems and does not have the sanity to seek help, but is it right to continue letting her harass people like this? One of these days she is going to hurt someone and than she will go to jail and never get help. I don't understand how society lets things like this happen. What are your thoughts on this? I think I should be able to walk in my city safely and known threats should be dealt with.

There are two kinds of street people, the first one is that they themselves discarded their nearest and dearest ones and live on streets, and the second type is that they are thrown to to the streets by society and family members, the first type is generally agressive or semi minded and love to live on streets, even if they are provided with accomodation, but the second ones deserves help,to some extent their problem is resolved by charitable institutions.

We used to be able to put people like that in institutions and make them wards of the state until they were set up with some help--medications, therapy, etc. They would typically spend a few months in the mental institution stabilizing then when they were able to, they'd be released under supervision.

Those days are gone, thanks to the ACLU--American Civil Liberties Union. They said it was violating someone's rights to take them off the streets and keep them from hurting themselves and others by forcing drugs and care on them. Our mental hospitals were emptied and all our sick people were thrown out on the streets with no hope and nowhere to stay.

Is this what happened in your country? The real loonies are the people who think they know more than the psychiatrists and physicians that would help those people if they were legally allowed to!

i dont know about where you live but ive looked into shelters around where i live because ive almost ended up on the streets a couple of times but the shelters here take people in for a week at most which i think isnt enough time for anyone to get themselves established in any way also in taking a psycoligy class once upon a time the teacher discussed with us about the people who work at places to help these people by handing out food and how they are tought to never approach the people within arms reach because the majority of them are completely insane and dangerous to themselves and others and thats not nessisairly because thier on drugs ither. it is sad i agree and dangerous to the people who have to venture near them but thats why they invented pepper spray.

In many countries even the progressive one experienced people living on the street. I have seen many in our country, there are non-government agencies who are helping them out of the street but still they prefer to stay and live in small carts with their family. I dont know what they really get from street living, they earned a living thru junks, even get their food from leftover in garbage. The government has done many measures, but still they are scattered all over, from the streets to the riverside or bridges. But in fairness, most of them are harmless, maybe if only they have a choice in life, they will choose a better situation.

I think there are several reasons why people are driven to live in the streets. Some maybe are caused by extreme poverty and people have nowhere to turn to. The social services arm of the government are trying their best to address this situation but because of limited resources, there is a limit to what they can accomplish. A number of street people are also mental cases and drunkards, that no matter what help is offered to them, they will always go back to the streets,
maybe because they feel the street is their home and they reject a more structured community and family atmosphere.

Civilized societies are often judged in their attitude to the the poor and steet people.
