Tv for kids good or bad? |
|
My kids are sitting infront of the tv, its raining outside. On comes a program called horrid henry. Its all about a naughty boy getting into mischief a bit like dennis the menice if anyone remembers him.
Now I have come to thinking is this all a bit of harmless fun on the telly and my kids should know whats right and whats wrong anyway or are these programs such a bad influence in our society causing kids to grow up as young holigans?
Do our tv programs really have such a great influence on how our kids grow up or is it down to the parents to ensure they know what is right and wrong?

Many show for kids are educational, exactly the type you want as parents while the others promote bad behaviour whether we realize it or not. One thing you should be aware of TV is the powerful advertising that target kids. TV programs are mostly bad influence for kids if you're not there beside them helping them seeing which is acceptable and which is not. Otherwise they would be like sponges, absorbing anything they see and then practice what was seen on TV in real life.

Skyeblue25 (194) | 2 months ago | My kids are well mannered and fortunately know what is right and wrong. The program that came on is actually aimed for younger kids and I guess its to make them laugh at the bad behaviour. They do watch a lot of educational programs too. They especially love things to do with animals or programs like art attack where they can make stuff and they get the ideas from the program.

| drewojeda (88) | 2 months ago | Hi, I agree that it really depends on the TV Program the kids are watching. Some of the programs are educational and will develop their mental capabilities. Sadly most of the programs aren't suitable for their ages, so parental guidance should always be observed. Depriving kids from watching TV, isn't always a good idea so better of guide the kids accordingly.

3. xannebull (1386) | 2 months ago | When my kids are watching movies, i have to be with their side so that i could monitor what they are watching especially scenes which are not appropriate for them to see. i don't let them watch movies which is for older ones.

Skyeblue25 (194) | 2 months ago | I do monitor closely what they watch. But even channels like Cbbc and CItv, that are aimed at kids need monitoring. They are designed for parents to put on and feel safe that their kids are watching age appropriate television, so the parents can stay busy with household chores or whatever while the kids are occupied. but this isn't the case, quite often there are programmes on those channels not suitable for my younger two girls.

Skyeblue25 (194) | 2 months ago | Thanks, what a great response and yes I have to agree I never had the urge to repeat things I saw on television as a child. So you could be right, though I don't agree with using the tv like a babysitter while I am busy, I like to keep an eye on what they are watching.
But I do stop them watching some programs but that is because my youngest gets frightened by some of the programs designed to entertain my eldest, that causes a few arguements, especially when its his favourite program. Lol It teaches him patience though as I will record it for him to watch later.

Didn't have cable when I was growing up, not till I was about 10 or 11.

At a young age, they are not supposed to watch certain programs that deplicts violence until they grow older and are able to understand what life is all about so the best thing to do is screen what they watch.

Skyeblue25 (194) | 2 months ago | Your comment goes back to my response to ladymarrisa that parents shouldn't use the tv as a babysitter. Though I think if we know what they are watching and the child knows right from wrong then there is no harm. My kids are very active, but for rainy days the tv is a blessing

| 9. a_caudel (1) | 2 months ago | My daughter used to live and breathe disney channel! we had it on all day long, even if we went watching it, tv was on in the background. then i started to notice that she was getting sassy like "hannah montana" and I outlawed it. well that left us w/ nothing good to watch at night, so i started putting the radio on instead. She started doing more with her toys and things to peak her curiousity. eventually we left the radio off too and i was amazed she was playing with paper dolls and making a conversation between them. so one thing led to another and we have been a virtually t.v. free home since janurary!! we have never been happier! and the way i presented it to other people they would respond "thats great!!!!" and she became proud of it. now i do let her watch 30-60 mins a day of ch 9 which is pbs all the shows are learning things, she only watches in the morning before school (it keeps her from falling back asleep!) durning summer we didn't even turn the t.v. on. now if i'm very tired or back is hurting (i have 4 ruptured disks) and i say "lets put in a movie" she will say NO!!!!!! and put on a play for me instead. Its the best thing i have ever done for our small family of two.

| a_caudel (1) | 2 months ago | sorry i forgot to say that i would highly reccomend anyone with kids do this, not necessarily because they will get an attitude or anything else, but when kids watch t.v. they tune out, they aren't stimulating their brains, or bodies. i wish i had implemented this rule years ago!! To the woman who said her 6 month old watches nick jr!!!! wow, if you need the time to do dishes or take a shower, get a "excersaucer" those things are fabulous, they buy you alot of time, with 9 different stationary toys and the baby can stand up but doesn't go anywhere (its not a walker) let that baby explore the feel, sight, sound, reflection of her/his new world, don't start him/her on a lifelong bad habit.

Skyeblue25 (194) | 2 months ago | I have got to say my kids have never been tv addicts, they actually prefer to play games together or run about outside. But they do watch it occassionally especially if it is raining.
I like all your points though I think you are amazing that you have abstained from the tv as well to improve your daughters well being and imagination and its a very good response thankyou for replying.

Skyeblue25 (194) | 2 months ago | I really hate the commercials aimed at kids. You can guarentee that if the kids watch them they will want everything they see, but then I think it teaches them that they can't have everything they want. I am not one to give in to pester power. My kids either have to wait until their birthday or christmas or they have to really earn it. For example for fantastic work at school
