You know, I went vegetarian when I was 13 and vegan a few years after that...and since I've always had animals in the house, I began to not only read ingredients for myself but for fuzzy family members as well. I noticed a lot of cat food has corn meal or another corn related ingredient as the first ingredient. The ingredients list lists the items from most present to least present by weight...meaning that out of all the ingredients in the food, corn was the most present. That's not good! For the most part, meat should be number one in the ingredients list to ensure your animal is getting a good source of meat protein.

However, wherever there is meat, there is chance of disease or the passing on of hormones, etc. Slaughterhouses are rarely up to par on the government regulations. For example, mad cow disease is one case of a sick cow being fed to the other cows because it wasn't healthy enough to be slaughtered for human consumption. However, then the mad cow was spread to the other cows that ate the remains of the sick cow, and it was eventually passed on to humans. You do have to keep in mind that some of the hormones fed to slaughterhouse animals will be passed on to the meat after slaughter. The meat is what the cows get the hormones for, after all--to grow at unnatural speeds to make production higher. There are also cases of tumors, etc., getting into human and/or animal meat because it simply can't be caught every time.

I buy natural cat food...it doesn't have corn as the first ingredient, it has all the nutrients my kits need, and the kind I buy is also organic...the animals aren't as mass produced nor as inhumanely treated and neglected...meaning that if one is sick or has a tumor/infection, it is more often noticed. You can do the best you can...but when it comes to meat and dairy, you just have to wish for the best and hope the people who produced the food knew what they were doing. thumbup

I don't buy cat food because my cat eats the food i prepare for all of us in the family. I also give my cat his share of the meal. Mostly he eats fish and rice mixed with other food. Then I also give him milk. Cat food is expensive and it's processed so what better food to feed the cat than food being eaten by humans. At least I know what my cat eats.
