...that Live Journal has done, this is the one that's made me delete my account from there. Some of you might think it to be trivial, which it probably is, and I'm just in my hot-head mode again, but it's bugged the heck out of me. They aren't allowing lj-cuts for a whole month because they want people to peruse their newsletter...at least that's what I got from it; someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Anyhoo, it made me hopping mad, and I once again refuse to avail myself of that particular site's blogging services. What do you all think about this?

If what you say is true (about them seeming to "blackmail" subscribers into signing up for their newsletters), then you have every right to be angry! I would recommend writing them a letter, or simply getting away from them. Even though it sounds trivial, it can't hurt to express your regret with their movements.

I'm not the only one who's upset with how LJ's turned out; many others have complained that they've gone way too commercial, and I agree. Oh, well. I deleted my journal, and that's that. Thanks for your response.:)

What the frilly heck? Are you serious? I'm not on my LJ as much right now but this, unfortunately, sounds like a typical LJ stunt. Meh.

I'm very serious. I posted an entry and put a couple of memes under a cut, but when I logged into LJ to view my page, the cut was gone and there was an explanation on the home site saying that for 1 month, no one could use the LJ cuts because of that stupid news letter that no one cares about anyway. I refuse to make another account with LJ because of this.

Um... I think you misunderstood the announcement. What they said was we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. It's not that they aren't allowing any user to use LJ cuts in their entries. It's that they've chosen to not cut official LiveJournal announcements in hopes of getting more people to read them.

I just went and tested this out in my own LiveJournal. I don't regularly use cuts, but I just posted an entry with one and it went through just fine. I've also seen a lot of them on communities like bad_service, customers_suck, and mock_the_stupid since that announcement was made.

Somewhat off-topic: I agree with you about LiveJournal becoming too commercial in the last several years. The only reason I've really stuck around is because of the communities I follow. It's really the users that make the site worthwhile, not the company that runs it. wink

Either way, I still don't like what they did. Plus, their layouts for the free accounts suck big time.I know that paid users get more perks, which they should considering that they're paying, but for the love of Pete, give the free account holders some better-looking layouts!

I have a Plus account right now, but I really agree with you. They've never really had a whole lot of options for free users when it came to layouts. I first joined when they required you to either have an invite code or purchase an account to get in. Didn't know anybody there, so I bought a two-month membership. I got totally spoiled by being able to create my own layouts for the original style system, so I just paid for a couple months' time when I wanted to update things. I think you can still do it that way--temporarily upgrade your account, choose the style you want, then let the time expire or downgrade again.
