Just got this in my email- can you relate to this
This is dedicated to those Born 1930-1979!
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930s 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s !!
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts, or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter, and drank koolaid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight,
because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day.
And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of wood scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound, CD's or Ipods, no cell phones!
no personal computers , no Internet or chat rooms...
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out any eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang
the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't, had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!
If YOU are one of them ... CONGRATULATIONS!

That was a very good email that you got and it is right on. we could do all of that and never have a worry. and now days you have the threat of mistreating your kids if you punish them. it was a whole lot better back then

I wonder how many kids would want to go out and play if they didnt have all the TV / Cartoon Channels on TV. or in the case of my step son MTV or the Music channels. they would be loss.

I completely relate to this email. I remember those day like yesterday. We did survive alot but now adays it ain't the same for sure. If you can get your kids to go out and play your doing pretty good and if you kept them out of trouble with the law then your considered a super parent now adays. Its harder now in ways but not as dangerous in some aspects like it was when we where all young

Yeah, sometimes it is harder now just because how things have really changed. And we use to love playing in the rain. but now if it is raining that just gives them more opportunty to just stay in and play more videos. thanks

Yea i think that we were lucky too. like i said we all survived and we are better for it. The kids of these days i think would go into shock if they had to spend thier days like we did. thanks for the response.

Reading that sure does bring back the memories of my childhood LOL. I don't think my kids would want to survive back in those times LOL. They have so many more options now than what we had back in the day!

This is excellent! I'm an 80's child and remember so many of those things.
I intend to raise my kids similar to the way I was. My husband and I survived. I know we're not perfect, but I do know we're not hopelessly broken either.
I don't want my kids to think they have to win at everything, or are to make it on every team they try out for. What are they going to be like when they get in the grown-up world and *can't* get everything they want?
I think I'd be doing them a disservice if I didn't let them experience failure, struggles, and a little pain every once in a while.
I say let them use their imaginations. Don't sit them in front of the t.v. or computer endlessly just because it's easier. Let them go outside and play and exercise! That's where kids belong!

Thanks so much for the response. I know what you mean about the team thing. Yeah once you are in the real world they are not going to make the team or get the job because everyone else does. So why start making them think that way. And right we are not all broken and we lasted.

I think that the cities are overcrowded, in the country things are not exactly the same, but closer to the way things were. I enjoy thinking back at when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon while I was watching it on tele. I kept running outside to look at the moon, and then back inside to look at the tele.

Thats cute about going inside and out. THere are so many different ways that we look at the world today. It is strange that we all turned out ok. You know what I mean. Thanks for the response.
