Oh, this is a very painful situation... Yeah, well, why did you gave 4,500$ to your mom? It's very kind of you, but if you need money to the point where you are asking yourself if you should ask your mom for you money back, maybe you can't afford this kind of gift... But what is done is done, maybe try to work some more hours... I really don't think you should come to your mother and tell her: give me my money back please... I don't know the relationship you have with your mother, but it might not be the best the best idea you ever had... sorry pal

I am sure through your lifetime your mother has given you much more then 4.5k, do you think she would ask for it back? If you were selfless enough to give it up, you should not think selfishly to want it back. I personally would not ask her for a dime back. Use the 500 you have left as a down payment for a used car, surely there are car dealers in this market that could use a down payment like that.
