This site does pay but I don't blame you for being skeptical to begin with, I was the same when I first joined however since then I have met many many members who have been paid and are delighted by the site. This fills me with a lot of confidence that when I finally reach payout then I will actually get paid!
In terms of tips everyone has different methods and ideas for making money and enjoying the site.
The main tip for making money is to reply with more than 2 sentences, that will only earn you a small amount of money the more you write the more you will get paid basically. But make sure it is of value to the person you are replying to otherwise they won't be pleased.
You won't earn a lot quickly here so take your time to get used to how things work, and post a few discussions etc. Meet people and most of all enjoy the site:D
