Swine Flu-Is It As Bad As The Media Is Saying Or Is It Just Hype? email this discussion to a friend?

What do you think? Is the H1N1 "outbreak" as bad as the media is making it out to be or are the news networks just trying to stir up a story? We have had so may kids say they "had swine flu" but were back at school 2 days after going to the doctor.

My understanding from a nursing friend is that a lot of doctors are "pre-diagnosing" it as swine flu because of the symptoms. The actual test takes 5 days to determine and cost $500.00 per test. There is no way I can see that every doctor is performing this test on every patient at that cost.

Anyone have any different info or opinions?

In my opinion, there is no difference between the standard flu and the swine flu. The symptoms are identical, and the chance you have dying from it are similar. The only real people at risk are older people and younger people. People with healthy developed immune systems don't have to worry. It may or may not be an "epidemic," but it is defiantly getting hyped by the media.

I agree. I haven't seen anything that makes me think it is any worse than the regular flu. My grandparents doctor even told them she wasn't worried about them because they don't work with the public and are not out around a lot of sick people.

It is not hype, the "real" swine flu is actually very dangerous. Sure, it may be similar to seasonal flu, but it is not the same. I cannot speak from experience, but I know people who have had H1N1 and they said it was terrible.
Someone said that he could hardly breathe when infected with Swine flu, and his lungs were all blocked up. People at risk that are not healthy are more likely to have severe symptoms but that doesn't mean it is harmless to other people. . .
Just my thoughts. . .

I totally agree that any type of flu can be harmful, especially if you have other medical issues going on. My concern was with how fast they made this vaccine and how untested it seemed to be. I am afraid that the "panic" the media loves to create has caused an overreaction in the medical field.

I think it is all hype. Sure there may be some cases out there. But it is not too unlike regular Flu, it is going to affect mostly young and old and others that have compromised immune systems. When I say affect- I mean be deadly to them. Others can fight it off just like they do the regular flu.
But how many thousands die from the regular flu each year. Probably more than have died from this H1N1 so far.
All the hospitals are being told to treat all flu cases as H1N1- so no one really knows which flu people have. they aren't being tested for specifics. So there really probably isn't that much of a spread here.
They are just looking for more ways to keep everyone under their thumb.
I don't doubt that this whole thing was engineered by the governments for God only knows what reasons. Populations control? Maybe.

I feel that it is another business strategy made by some pharmaceutical companies who has the capabilities to make a move worldwide. They have the capability of making some declarations worldwide through WHO on this flu.

In the aircrafts, i saw cabin crews are measuring temparature by a new device. They are pointing a device on passenger's forehead from 3/4 inches away and the machine is giving the temparature within 2/3 seconds. Once they find a passenger with high temparature, that fellow is getting down from aircraft. Within a very short time all the passengers are tested. This swine flu has made a business of this temparature measuring device. (who has made that-- made a good business, he must be thanking this swine flu)

Then the vaccine company, can you guess the extent of their business?

Everyday more people are leaving this earth for not getting the food. None looked at them.

I want one of those thermometers. I work at school and that would actually be amazing. I never can get the one that you are supposed to run across their forehead right. But it is amazing how we suddenly need an untried vaccine and new gadgets now to survive something that has been around so long.

It is apparent that Swine Flu is becoming a serious problem instead of just a joke.

Why do they hype up such an serious peoblem? I think it is unnecessary to criticize the media during such a time of energency. About 10 days ago, White House declared H1N1 flu national emergency, which tells us that it is becoming such a serious problem for it can spread quickly and it may be out of control someday.

Of course, for most people, it is necessary to pay lots of attention to Swine Flu, just be careful and take some measures to build our body. Happy myLotting!

When the outbreak came to our country, the media was all hyped about it. But when the number of cases increased, the coverage decreased significantly. This is maybe so that people won't be too worried and can still live normally. But during the recent reports of the supposedly new type of it, our government is still doing the same procedures they have been doing and increased the number of scanning machines. A lot of people here are not really that worried because the number of cases and deaths due to leptospirosis due to the recent floodings here is much more significant and alarming than that of H1N1. That is why the media is now more concerned about the leptospirosis cases.

I personally, again my opinion, think that the media serves up nothing but scare tactics. Yes, I am sure the swine flue can be deadly. The regular flu can be deadly if not treated. I think the media comes up with one case of something every year they can get a catch phrase out of, and then proceed to scare the entire country.

Another case in point, they have people terrified to spend money right now. But if people would spend money, then plants could hire people and make goods, and those employees could spend money for other plants, see where I am going???

That is what bothers me. If we are not scared of the economy, then be scared of the flu. Next if will me west nile virus again. I hate the fact that the media seems to think we have to be scared of something new every day.

Yes I think that it is. Last August I went on a cruise ship with friends. We stayed in NY and went shopping the day before we left from Brooklyn. The person who arranged the vacation took sick two days later and did not leave her cabin. The day after our arrival back in NY she took her flight home to Florida and was still very ill. She immediately went to her doctor and has not left hospital since September 7th.

Both lungs have now collapsed and she is on life support. She has not responded to any antibiotics or any other medication and is now expected to die shortly. The doctor's have said that it is only a matter of time.

Yes. I think that it is as bad as they make out to be.
