Quitting smoking - Help!! | | I quit smoking cold turkey for about a month until recentley, because of some stressful events, I started back up. It felt like I was doing so well! Does anyone have any advice for stopping without the patches, shots, or anyting else? Just straight up cold turkey. Also, does any x-smokers have any advice to help with cravings?

A friend of mine suggested setting a date and we decided Monday would be the day that we both stopped. My friend has gone cold turkey and is finding it hard but we keep in touch and support each other, that way each of us knows we are not the only one struggling and we are each others moral support. You could try stopping with a friend, this might give you the support and understanding that you need to help you to see it through. I wish you good luck.

| chickenteeth (32) | 3 weeks ago | Thank you for the words of advice! I am going to try again and this time try it with a friend like you said. I just get so mad so easily when I am going through the quitting process! Very irritable. But with a friend they could calm me down with a little punch in the arm or two, haha.

BulletTooth (190) | 3 weeks ago | Haha yes a punch in the arm will calm you down. If you quit with a friend at least he or she will understand how you're feeling so they can help you without being patronising. Let me know how you get on.

I suspect there is more in the cigarettes than nicotine, however it does not matter. Quitting smoking is probably one of the hardest things you will ever do. Do not beat yourself up over it, but quit again, one of these days it will stick.
Remember the tobacco companies got you hooked on an drug to take your money. Shake off your chains you have been manipulated. Cigarettes are not your friend, although you might think they are.

mariposaman (2476) | 3 weeks ago | The cheap way to quit is to go cold turkey. Remember you had to work for a long time to get addicted, it takes a long time and guts to quit for most people. I quit 20 years ago and still find the odd urge to have a smoke. It passes quickly now thank goodness.
For years sometimes in a stressful situation, or after a good meal and dessert and I would be finishing off with a coffee or tea, that little nicotine devil would speak up and try to convince me to have a smoke, just one would not hurt, but I know better if I have one by next week I would be smoking a half a pack and by the next week it would be a pack or more a day.
The first two weeks are the hardest, after that each day gets easier, I am not saying easy, but easier, until one day you realize you do not have that need and you have gone hours without craving a cigarette. Then you start looking at others smoking and smell them and you realize you are no longer one of them and realize there is no turning back if you are smart. They say if you get over the two year mark, that seems to be the hump, you should be home free unless you do something stupid like have a cigarette. I tried a butt a couple of times, but the desire was not there, it tasted awful.
