Are you for or against the death penalty? |
|
I think, it depends upon the crime and if there is absolutely no doubt as to the guilt of the person. Some people will continue to kill as long as they can get away with it. Serial killers, serial rapist, those who plan and cold heartedly take someone's life, and especially those who would commit these, and other crimes against children, the most vulnerable and innocent of society, should be dealt with as quickly as possible. I have no sympathy for anyone who is executed because they committed unspeakable acts against a child. I can feel sympathy for the family of the person facing execution, but I also feel for the families of their victims. The family of the prisoner has years to come to terms with the impending death of their loved one, the family of the victims, however, simply have to learn to deal with it after the fact.
At the same time, if I were faced with the task of actually helping send someone to death row, I am not sure I could do it...I guess it would depend upon what they did and the circumstances involved. For crimes committed in the heat of the moment...most of the time, I think life imprisonment would suffice.

3. mkeanel01 (638) | 1 month ago | Actually I'm not against death penalty. What I'm against is the process the government have when accusing a criminal. Here in the Philippines most of the people are against death penalty specially the church, because they believe its against God's law. But for me its okey, so that criminals would stop to think of the death penalty.

If I want a person to suffer, just put him in jail and do hard labor and release him when his an old man and let him live the rest of his life in misery because of his lost time, the stigma of being an ex convict and the loneliness that goes with it. Cheers!

5. astonysh (1824) | 1 month ago | Which would you prefer? Being locked away in dreadful, grotty conditions, surrounded by undesirable individuals, and knowing that you may be living like that for another 50 or 60 years - or dying in a matter of weeks? And endless years to live thinking about what brought about this situation - so much time for regret, no chance ever to straighten things out.
Life meaning life, if the prison system is as tough as it should be (so let us ignore the holiday camp regime that they have in the UK for example), would be a very unpleasant prospect. Death would be a relief and a release in comparison.
I am opposed to the death penalty on other grounds anyway, but I do not anyway see it as necessarily a worse punishment. Life meaning life in rigorous, strictly enforced conditions (without any prospect of parole) should be the norm.

Janey1966 (137) | 2 weeks ago | Hi!
If we had the Death Penalty re-introduced in the UK I honestly think that - one day - there would be a Miscarriage of Justice. Yes, there have been great strides in forensic science which can now be used to fight crime from the past...but who would we kill and who would we save? We haven't got room for a Death Row, our Prisons are overcrowded. What we should do is shorten sentences for those involved in robberies and other crimes involving money. That may sound extreme but why give people 15 years or whatever if no-one has been killed when a rapist/murderer doesn't even get that sentence in the first place?
I am also quite liberal in the fact that (wherever possible) an attacker should be made to confront the victim in a controlled environment with Family Liaison Officers and the like. I'm not saying we should be soft on crime, just find out why it is happening to such an extent and what can be done to reduce it i.e. give unemployed youngsters something to do!

6. buping (541) | 1 month ago | hi there, it depends on the situation i think. in my mind, for those guilty people who had killed person, they should be judged death penalty, coz life is the gift from god and the biggest treasure to every parents. everyone has no right to take another's life. so they should be paid with thier own life. but for those who dont, it is not wise to take their life.

7. cloudwatcher (3444) | 1 month ago | I am in favour of the death penalty as a MAXIMUM penalty for some PROVEN crimes. The problem is the proof. We all know that there have been cases of wrongful imprisonment and of wrongful capital punishment. In a cut and dried case (caught in the act and confessed or such) I believe the death penalty should be carried out quickly (not on death row for years) and as humanely as possible.
Where life imprisonment is the punishment, I think prison life should be much more stringent. While prisoners need physical and mental exercise, they should not have the "good" things of life. I know putting them to work would increase the risk factor but this is something that should be employed provided safety of the guards was ensured.

XiaoLin (137) | 1 month ago | Between all the answers I read, this is the one I agree most, even if I would say I'm not in favour of death penalty, mostly for the reasons you explained above. Not because of religion, since justice should not be connected to any religion. The most deterrent would be the impossibility of 100% proof, and the lack of dignity in deciding other people's life and death, even if they are killers or worse.
In Italy there's no death penalty, and I hope we will never have it. I would instead return to work-labour, in a new modern and aecological way: producing energy by using cyclettes. I know it sounds like a joke but it's not, I'm serious.

8. bing28 (1910) | 1 month ago | I'm against the death penalty as I feel criminals could feel their punishments more when serving sentence for life than immediately ending their lives. Besides this could have a little more time to correct those wrong judgedment, those who were pinned guilty, when all the while they're innocent.

| 9. carline76 (49) | 1 month ago | I'm against death penalty because I believe that no one has the right to take away other human's life no matter what position he has in the society. What I want to do is penalized them. So for example, a man raped a woman, have him _ by a _.
If he had killed a lot of people, I think life imprisonment without the possibility of pardon or parole would suffice. Taking one's freedom and family away maybe not enough for all the lives he had taken but making the life of a criminal more miserable would not bring back a dead loved one's life. Even if you have him tortured to death, would it change anything? Of course no. Let God deal with him alone.
I'm saying this not because I have not been a victim. Believe me I have been. Two of my cousins have tried to "mol_st" me many times when I was just 4 til 6 years old. I have not even told this to my parents until I was in my 20's. Now, I am 33, I believe I have forgiven them but I just don't prefer to see them again.
