I am not sure that rich is the word that I would use with English, but anyway.
Its advantage is that it widely used across the world as a common-second language. So it can be important to have a common language when it comes to trade and tourism. If a Frenchman wants to buy goods from a Japanese company, for example, it might be a problem if he knows no Japanese, and the company has no-one available who speaks French.
It is an interesting thought to look back to the Middle Ages, and asked how people managed to trade using different languages. How did traders from Flanders sell their goods in Italy for example? I believe, but cannot confirm, that some form of Latin was widely used. Imagine the potential problems though.
