Wedding DJ - the perfect playlist  email this discussion to a friend?

Nero11 (93) 3 years ago

Next year I am going to be DJ for a number of weddings. This one is always one of the toughest gigs given the diversity of the crowd and the subject matter (no adultery songs please). What would be your favourite wedding floor filler. I'm not talking first dance, I'm talking as a wedding guest. If your single and hope to find a future bride, what would you hope to hear? What are the best general dance songs to get a crowd going. I've been until recently a music snob and always been that loathsome DJ who plays what he thinks people should hear, not what they want to hear. Now I want to know what they want to hear. Let me know your top tunes, top 5, top 10, whatever?

Congratulations for being selected or hired as wedding Djs for next year. In terms of your list of songs and music-- make it more on the love songs side and mixed it wiht modern jazz or you can ask the couple (to get wed) about their repertoire or types of music to aid you in coming up with a list. good luck!

Accepting bookings for weddings (and other family gatherings) and children's parties means that you have 'come of age' as a DJ ... you have arrived. You are prepared to be a servant rather than an 'entertainer' (or, more properly, both!). You will have on hand everything that anyone is likely to request and you will be able to introduce it in a way that makes the requester feel great and others to feel that they're included and invited to dance ... even if it's the conga, the chicken dance or whatever!

Weddings (baptisms, bar mitzvahs, funerals ... oyvey!) are times when (especially if there are kids present) people are not ashamed to be kids (though they may need encouragement).

For a wedding you should have on hand:

1) Things that the Bride and Groom have requested (especially ask them what is their favourite or special tune for the first dance)

2) Anything that was popular thirty or forty years ago ... especially romantic, sloppy stuff

3) Anything that kids are into ... if kids want to dance, they will pull adults on the floor to dance with them

4) One or two stupid things ... the conga, the chicken dance, the twist ... you name it - the more hackneyed and well known, the better.

Remember that you are there so that everyone has a great time. The more you can involve yourself with the party, the better. Get some names. Laugh at people who need to be laughed at (but kindly and sensitively, of course). Give people scope to be sentimental. Make sure the kids have a good time ... OK, it isn't a 7 year old's birthday party but most people are kids at heart (and if they aren't, they darned well should be!).

Try to get as much background as you can from the family/families beforehand. Names; likes/dislikes; snippets; naughty secrets; stories ... and use them in your links. As a DJ you don't just make the music happen, you make it happen to a theme and for a purpose. You are an 'uncle' who plays stuff, makes jokes and actually GUIDES the session so that people get to know each other better and have a far better time than they ever imagined they would!

Add - as 1a)

Songs which are special to the parents of the bride and groom, if you can. Jeez! The sentiment just oozes at those moments ... but then use your sense of timing for a silly one to follow!

Thanks for the advice. It is quite a daunting prospect... What would you want to hear?

What I would want to hear doesn't matter, LOL. I am 'grandfather' material and British (so, I think, culturally different).

Yes, it's quite challenging but I'm sure you can do it. Just get an idea of what each generation likes (there are likely to be three or four generations at a wedding) and play what you have that's suitable, Don't forget that you control things so your 'presentation' needs to follow a pattern ... a suggestion might be:

1) Sentimental - the bride and groom's dance
2) Sentimental - a dance for the parents
3) Something childish or humourous ... to get everyone dancing
4) Back to something slow for the seniors ... depending on the time of day, many older people will leave a wedding party at a certain time, leaving the young ones to enjoy themselves ... you will best know what happens in your culture!
5) Time for you to present what you want (presumably, what you have beem booked for).

If you are successful at this (and are good at communicating with your audience), you can expect many similar gigs. It can be very profitable if you find you have the knack! Sometime it helps to work with two people - one who is good at getting people to join in and the other who is good at putting the right music on at the right time.

I'm British too and it will be a British wedding... and I imagine there may be grandfathers there that need pleasing... Thanks for your advice, very helpful and encouraging.
