We often hear stories of boys being told to be a man and not cry.

But I prefer seeing men who can show their emotions once in a while and prove to us women that they are also human enough to feel vulnerable and shed some tears.

For the women out there, do you prefer to have your husband or boyfriend let you see him cry once in a while? Or would you rather he always show a strong front when he's with you no matter what?

For the men, can you admit that there are times you also cry? Why or why not?

My father was straight off the boat from Italy & he believed that to show any emotion was considered a weakness. If we dared to cry in front of him it just made him more angrier & we were girls. So growing up I tried my best not to cry because I figured it was a weakness that I had to overcome. It wasn't until I met & married my husband that I learned it was okay to cry every once in a while. We both cried at our wedding & when my Mom passed away we both cried once again. I never once thought him weak for showing his emotions. It just made me love him even more.

That's a lovely story. I can identify with you! My husband is also one who can cry with me especially when I need the emotional support.:)

Hmm. I am a simple son who just learned to love his dad. My dad, he is very scary when I was still a child and seldom do i talk to him due to his bad temper. I am now in college and when i set off to another province here, my dad cried. For years, my dad remained strong and had a huge hold over his emotions. During that time when I was in the airport, and about to book my ticket, i felt there was a rise of emotions not just to my dad but even to my younger siblings. Because of that, I learned that my dad really cares for me and that he loves us.:) I am also a male and it is a normal thing though I often hide it in the highest form to redeem the pride. It is a very normal feeling for boys to cry, but not normal to cry in public since it was the public itself who gave a huge value of men in society. Masculinity and having the patriarchal type of government, men are expected to be strong and CRYING is perceived to be a sign of weakness, a sign of giving up.

Men are just humans, and we also have a lot of weaknesses that WOMEN should fill in. good day!

Hi eldeee. You're right, society sometimes has twisted ideas that become the norm even if they're not so reasonable.

I'm glad that you had a chance to see another side of your dad. And yes, I agree that men and women should help each other out by filling in where one is weak.

frenzybabe (29)  1 month ago

I agree as well. It has been society who have formed the norm of men being masculine and all, perceive crying as a sign of weakness. But it's a new era, people are becoming open minded already though there are still some who hold on to old beliefs and conforms with the perception of norm that society has molded. Yet sometimes it is through crying that we are able to let out emotions that are bottled up inside. This can actually save you from too much stress and even heart attacks.

hi writermom.. it is true that we don't like to cry around others but that doesn't mean we are strong, that isn't it.. we do suffer but just are more shy sharing those things with others coz we become a little conscious about it, we do cry but not let others know... well i guess i am sort of an emotional person so when ever something wrong happens my friends seem to know something is not alright but i share only if i feel it is appropriate to..

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I understand what you mean. I am sometimes selective too on who should only see me get emotional. With my husband, it's no holds barred. But with other people, it will depend how close they are to me.

Still, it's nice to be able to share tears with people you really care about and who cares about you:)

I don't cry very often, but I'm not ashamed of it when I do (admittedly I'm usually alone when I cry). For me, death has always been hard to deal with...so when I cry I'm usually thinking of someone deceased or because someone is ill. I've never cried over say a relationship or because I was insulted or slighted in some way. Every now and then, though, a movie does make me cry...not always a sad one, either.

...Hi writermom8, I believe that men who cry are strong enough within themselves, not to worry about what people think of them when they cry. Also that they are so complete in their manhood, that the tears only tend to make them look stronger not weaker. If a man can show that emotional side of him, then to me he is the better man for doing so, and he has my greatest respect. It's also healthier to cry, man or woman, instead of holding it all inside and being stressed out. Tears are cleansing. Just my perspective. Take it easy.

If Im sad I cry. there is not a dang thing wrong with that. People who say real men don't cry don't know any real men then. Real men don't care what other people think and aren't afraid to show their emotions.

Hello writermom8, i recently read an intriguing poem about a man crying. I did not understand it at first, but i got to understand it. There are men who cry like children and then there are men who cry with pride. Those men who cry like a child, weep aloud and those who cry with pride, weep without sound.

I find that a man can cry when ever they feel the need to. I find it brave for a man to cry soundly. I do not think a man should cry aloud for that defeats the purpose of being a man.

Well my family is very old school European so for them so see a man cry, well it would be like the end of the world for him!! Seriously, my father thinks that men should hold everything inside and "be a man" as he says. That's just utter nonsense as far as I'm concerned because why shouldn't men show their feelings? They're human too and should feel free to cry when the need arises. It doesn't make a man any less of man just because he chooses to cry. My husband doesn't cry that often though he has before as he's quite sensitive and I actually appreciate the fact that he's comfortable and feels secure with himself to cry around me. I don't see it as a sign of weakness at all because it isn't. I quite frankly wouldn't want to be with some ultra macho male that looks down on men crying, because this type tends to be really stereotypically chauvanistic.
