Hi debbie2009, when we were younger, my parents would take us to Chinatown every Saturday or Sunday (usually Sunday) to Yum-cha, and eat Dim Sum. It was crazy with lines of people waiting for tables, Chinese families all talking and laughing and so, so busy. The food was phenomenal. All the food that comes through on the carts (trolleys) and all you have to do is wave the person over and point to what you want and they take these tongs and grab all the little containers, steaming hot and plops it down on the table. All the dim sum, the shrimp dumplings, shui mai, the white rice noodle with pork or beef or shrimp wraps (ha-cherung). The lo-mi fan (lotus leaf rice). We loved the beef balls, and the egg tarts would be for dessert (very sweet). The chicken feet was a favorite of my mom's and the little spareribs were my dads. We would also get beef tripe, so good with hot oil. Then we would order dishes from the kitchen, beef chow fun (white rice noodles) and the seafood chow mein (not the American style chow mein, but pan fried thin noodles). My mouth is watering just writing about this. The best are the sauces, the hot oil, hot peppers, sesame oil, soy sauce and the rock salt/pepper. It just brought all the flavors alive. I haven't been in a very long time since all the siblings have moved away and my mom passed away. But I do think of it often.

debbie2009, This is a very traditional Cantonese custom and like you I do enjoy it as well. I feel that the Cantonese Yum Cha not only unique but healthy too. However, they are not as easily available than in Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Maccau as the Chinese overseas have other observance and eating preferences. Also, as this is only available during the day, you can hardly find it after lunch time. For me, I literally enjoy everything in the menu and over the years the culinary has become ever more creative with new seasonal items like lobster rice roll, mango egg tarts, deep fried banana prawn fritters and the occasional deep fried durian rolls. I never grew out of these menus like pork buns, steamed dumplings, etc and when I am back at these places I am sure to indulge myself to spoilt at the nearest available Yum Cha restaurant shop.
