i've always loved travelling to quiapo just to eat at this fabled restaurant. i don't mind the commute and traffic as i live down south just so i can feast on the siopao (bread with meat, egg, and sausages for fillings), noodles, and siomai (steamed ground pork or beef with vegetables wrapped in a thin egg wrapper). i remember when i was younger my grandfather would take me to quiapo church every friday and we would eat after hearing mass at ma mon luk. just a backgrounder, the restaurant was established by ma mon luk (1896-1961), a pioneering chinese filipino chef and entrepreneur. born in guangdong, china, he was a grade school teacher in guangzhou when he decided to emigrate to the philippines in 1918. according to stories, he migrated to the philippines in order to earn his fortune and win the hand of a girl whose wealthy cantonese family looked none too kindly on his poverty. arriving penniless in manila, ma mon luk decided to peddle chicken noodle soup, utilizing egg noodles. he soon became a familiar sight on the streets of manila, plodding down with a long bamboo pole slung on his shoulders with two metal containers on each end. one vat contained his especially concocted noodles and strips of chicken meat, while the other stored chicken broth heated by live coals underneath. with a pair of scissors, he would cut the noodles and meat to serve to his customers. among his frequent customers were students from the various schools and universities in manila, whom he would regale with tales about China. ma mon luk himself called his concoction "gupit", after the tagalog word for "cut with scissors". a popular theory of the origin of the word "mami" is that "ma" came from his name and "mi" came from the chinese word for "recipe"; thus "mami" stands for "the recipe of mr. ma. ma mon luk soon opened his first restaurant in binondo, where he introduced his equally famous siopao, a steamed pork dumpling enhanced by a secret sauce. ma mon luk nonetheless continued to peddle his wares on the streets, advertising his restaurant by giving away free samples. by the 1950s, ma mon luk and his 'mami' were nationally known, and ma mon luk became the iconic chinese restaurant, sprouting many imitators who failed to equal its success. at one point, in the mid 1990s, there were at least six ma mon luk restaurants in metro manila, but as of 2006, only the branches in quezon avenue and quezon boulevard in quiapo remain open. the branch in quezon avenue is the cleaner between the two but i prefer to go to the quiapo branch since i share a lot of happy memories here with my departed grandfather. anyway, aside from ma mon luk whereelse can you find great tasting dimsum here in manila? one restaurant that comes to mind is kowloon but my experiences with their siopao deserves a different post. lol! have you had any similar experiences eating in ma mon luk? please share them and i'll gladly read them while eating a bowl of hot piping mami with siopao and siomai. cheers!!!

Yes i had an experience with Ma Mon Luk 5 years ago also in their quiapo outlet. the food taste so good. i love their noodles, siomai and siopao. this post made me think of asking my husband to go with me maybe this weekend to visit and eat in the nearest ma mon luk outlet. My chinese friend was the one who introduced ma mon luk to me. he treated me after we did our training.

Good decision that you did not go there yesterday... the Pacquiao welcome parade/motorcade made the traffic even worst. So next friday is a good schedule for you to have your heavenly MML siopao and noodles. Who knows i will there too and meet you friend hehehehehe!

hi msfrancisco. the thought didn't occur to me until you mentioned it now. the traffic would really dampen the mood. not that i don't think manny pacquiao doesn't deserve the motorcade, he deserves all the accolades that he is getting. kudos to him! but to be in a traffic jam and sweat it out under the heat becuse of this motorcade is altogether a different story. anyway, yeah, i'll be there next week but unsure when. it'll be nice to actually meet fellow mylotters based here in manila. hopefully, that project takes off so we get to meet in person our online friends. i know that this project has been in the works for the more active filipino mylotters but haven't really heard anything definite from them. just a thought. cheers!!!

hi mimiang. yeah, the quezon avenue branch is definitely cleaner than the quiapo branch but the quality and taste of food is just the same. the quiapo branch though has a lot of history. the restaurant's walls have mounted and framed news clippings and articles about ma mon luk and it's humble beginnings. it's a good way to kill the time while waiting for your order to be served. that's why everytime i visit this branch i make sure that i sit at different tables so i get a chance to read all the articles displayed on its walls. lol!!! cheers!!!

Hi there allen0187! Eating at Ma Mon Luk has been in my food tripping list. I’ve always wondered how their mami and siopao tastes like. After being able to eat mami at Ma Mon Luk, I was able to confirm that they certainly taste different from other restaurants that serve mami. Siopao lovers should visit Ma Mon Luk too. If I am not mistaken there are only two stores left, the one in Quezon City and the other in Manila at Quiapo. Sorry, but Ma Mon Luk in Quiapo is sorely lacking in ambience. People who have not been introduced to its offerings would probably grimace at the drab surroundings. However, while I love the food at MML, I prefer to eat Chinese at Le Ching (Greenhills and I think they have in QC too). By the way, I am from Baguio City but I do frequent Metro Manila that's why I have ideas when it comes to such places.

hi dolce. agree with your point about ma mon luk quiapo sorely lacking in ambiance. it might turn potential customers off but once they have tasted what ma mon luk has to offer, they will surely forget about the place and just concentrate on the food. been at le ching as well and they do offer great chinese food. i have a list of old chinese restaurants, usually located at sta. cruz and ongpin, that i want to visit. anyway, i guess that will have to wait next year. baguio has a lot of great restaurants as well. usually frequent those that are in burham and in along session road. particularly like cafe volante for their pizza. cheers!!!
