Where does love fit in with the Wicca faith? Perhaps I should give my definition of love pertaining to the Wicca faith. Love is compassionate, patient, and gentle. Love is also open, expanding, and giving. Love is about respect. All of these descriptions make up how love is used in Wicca. Care, respect and concern for the planet, the environment, and one another is obvious. But the same holds true for all the inhabitants of our planet. Love and Wicca are also about relationship with the Divine and with the Divine that resides within each of us. Neither destroy, but rather build. When I first began my path, I started looking at Native American theology, the culture, the ethics and the ideals. Everyone in the tribe was regarded as a valuable asset of the tribe. It was like a single family instead of groupings of family in that each was genuinely concerned about the next. The youngest to the eldest were held as an important part of that family. They recognized that all things were kith and kin. They worked together for the benefit of all. Now it may actually sound odd, but I read once that if a woman's husband passed, leaving her a widow, they were concerned that she would "dry up", her spirit actually diminish, and would find a surrogate male to "be with" her. This could even be her sister's husband. It isn't the fact that she may end up sleeping with her brother in law, it is the fact that they were so concerned about her well being, on all levels that overwhelms me. The tribe would still have taken care to make sure she had food and shelter and basic mundane necessities. She would still have contributed to the welfare of the tribe. But they were there for her on all levels. This is where love fits in the Wiccan faith. We find it in the care and concern for all things on all levels. We find it in the healing spells we do for the planet and one another. We find it in prayers. We find it in the reaching out to one another. We also find love in the laughter of a child. We find it in the song of a bird. We find it in inspiration. We give it in prayer, creative outlets, spells and rituals. We find it in our brothers and sister and in the Divine. Love is found within us and all about us. As we give so shall we receive. Love is an infinite resource. It does not force, but instead works to create balance, harmony and positive change. Wicca and love work alike in this way. Together they can create more love. They are expansive.
