Today I tried to format my Laptop. When I inserted the bootable CD into the drive, it is shown as audio CD only and I was not able to boot the system from CD. I thought the problem was with the CD and I checked it with some other system and in the other systems, I was able to boot the systems from the same CD..Hence it is clear that there is no problem with the CD. Then I inserted some other CDs, which were wrote already with some files. Most of the CDs were not readable by my Laptop and when I looked the properties of the CD, I found the memory as zero ,both for free space and used space. But I am able to see the content of the CDs in some other systems. Another important factor is my Laptop is reading the CDs, if they are of original version (like the installation CDs of some software, issued by the software vendors). But the laptop is reading the CDs if they were written by me.Also I did not find any difficulty in reading or opening the above all CDs in the past,in the same laptop. Is there any setting should be made to make my Laptop to read all the CDs? If so, how can I do that? What is the reason for the above problem? Please let me know mylotters, as I need to format the system very soon..

Hi wordlinx, I just want to ask you a couple of questions! What version of windows are you using? Your bootable cd, this is the original cd that came with your laptop and it has either xp, vista or windows 7 on it? Anyway, I don't know if you have heard of or are familiar with something called cmos setup? Well, when you first boot up your computer you get the black screen with all the writing and so forth well, on this screen somewhere there is a small message saying something like 'press f12 for setup' or 'press del'. You need to press one of these keys and you need to do it very quickly whilst you are still on the black screen with all the writing. The keys to press are different for each system. Anyway, once you press the key in question this takes you to what is called cmos setup. Once in there you are searching for the option 'Boot priority'. When you first bootup your system the computer looks for the location of your operating system, this will be on your hard drive and your hard drive will be number one in order of boot priority and it's likely that your cd rom drive will be number 2. You need to change the boot priority so that you cd rom drive is checked first when you first boot up your computer. Make sure that your boot up cd is already in the drive and then change these settings. Once you have done this exit cmos setup, make sure you save the settings, and then when your system boots up it will boot from the bootable cd and then you should be able to proceed in reinstalling windows. Once you have done this you need to make sure that you return to cmos setup and restore the original settings that you changed. Under boot priority make sure that you change it so that your hard drive is number one and cd rom drive is second. I'm sorry about all the information here and I hope that it's of some use to you. It's generally not wise to go into cmos setup unless you know what you are doing but if you go into cmos make sure you write down the original settings so that you can change them back afterwards, keep a written record of everything you do. Good luck and I hope that you are able to resolve your problem. Andrew

I have already changed the booting order in the CMOS set up and still the system is not reading anything from the cds if the cds are not original.THe system starts to boot only if we insert the original bootable cd in the drive. On the other hand, the same cds are readable in the other systems without any difficulty..Other than booting, I am not able to see even the content of the cd by locating the drives. I have installed windows xp pro in my system with the service pack 3. The system is not responding to the CDs only in the recent days and it was very fine in the past. I am not sure of the cause and also I don't think the problem is with the lens. If the problem is with the lens, then no cds should be red by my system, even if the cds are original.I have send a support ticket to the manufacturer of the system and expecting their reply..Thanks a lot for spending your valuable time to resolve my problem and sorry for the delayed reply.

you need a boot CD which normally resides on the Windows CD, just like the DOS functions. If your CD is not inserted into the operating system boot sector then you can not using the CD to booting.

I am using the boot CDs only and also these CDs are readable in the other systems without any problem or even delay.Only this system is not recognizing the CDs if they are inserted.Only the CDs which are original are readable in my laptop and I have tried with many original CDs and the CDs written by us already.I found no improvement. As the CD drive is reading the original CDs, I don't think the problem is with the CD drive and I think that there might be some changes in the settings..But I am not sure of that as I am not much familiar with the computers. I hope I will resolve this issue very soon. Thanks for your response to this discussion and sorry for the delayed reply to your response.
