Being born in a multi racial country where learning to speak more than 1 language is a way of life, reflecting on it,i am little glad i was born here in my country of Malaysia, i grew up using a dialect of chinese in my family but with friends i had to use cantonese, english and malay which we pick up from other children we played with. Then in school, the subjects were taught in our national language of Malay and other half in english..Bcoz of this background,i am now fluent in English, Malay ,Mandarin and picking up Japanese coz i married a Japanese n my 9 yr daughter goes to a Chinese vernacular school where subjects are taught in 3 languages.May seen confusing but ,actually not at all to the children used to this type of environment,,So she uses english, malay or mandarin to her schoolmates and friends, speaks Japanese to her mum and maternal grandparents and relations. Cantonese and mandarin to my family..And she switches between the languages as if it was the most natural thing to do,not realising how valuable her skill is,great thing is that other children are almost same as her.. That is an advantage in a multi racial society, isnt it? How many languages can u speak or understand?
