The cartoons of the past versus the cartoons of the present

How many of you remember the old cartoons?(Captain Planet, The PIrates of Dark Water, Johnny Quest) They really marked my childhood. I used to watch the re-runs as well. I think they were even a bit educational and I liked the graphic. Why don't they make cartoons like that anymore? All the new cartoons are violent, with stupid subjects and a very disgusting graphics. I personally don't like cartoons like Ed, Edd and Eddy. I appologize to the fans, but this is my personal opinion!! I'm not even that old (I'm 25) and I still feel I'm not in touch with the newest "trends" I just don't understand what people find so fascinating about these kind of cartoons. In know in some cases the subjects are good, fool of good humour or even sarcasm (The Simpsons, South Park) and they don't use a good graphic on purpose to leave the bare naked meaning of the message they wanted to send. I understant the principle as a way of expression in animated art. But in my opinion, they pushed the concept too far. What do you think?

I know there are still good cartoons outthere. But the fact is, they are actually part of the old series. They have their own unique style and they can't change it now. Batman is a brand and they have to keep it that way. The same with spiderman. These kind of franchises won them a lot of money and changinh it now would be a bad marketing movement for them. What you said just proves my point : there are no interesting new cartoons.

I really agree with you there. I grew up watching cartoons like He-Man, old TMNT, Smurfs and others. The 80s and 90s were the good old days. Today's cartoons just aren't as appealing to me. It's not that I've outgrown them or anything, I just find the plot and stories not to my liking.

I know what you mean! I also grew up watching those cartoons and even some further back, from the 60's and 70's. Shows like Spacaghost, Captain Caveman, The Centurions, The Transformers! These were very good cartoons and I really don't understand why they drifted so far from that style. I noticed that today they prefer making a movei or an animation rather than a cartoon. It's cheeper, indeed but it's just not the same. The last cartoons I saw that waere worth my while, are Stargate Infinity and X-men Revolution. These two are closer to what cartoons used to mean. From what I understand, boomerang is still broadcasting the odl cartoons : Galtar, Birdman, etc. Unfortunately my cable compay doesn't offer it. If you hear of any way to watch these shows online, I will be eternally greatfull! I foud only a few of them on streaming or torrents.

I didn;t mean the new stuff like Final Fantasy or Titan A.E or such. I meant the series like Cow and Chicken, South Park and such. The cartoons that are promoted on tv today. I'm not absurde to say animation technichs haven't improved. On the contrary. My problem is exactly with the fact that even though the tehcniques are superior now, they tend to minimize the details and diform the shapes. Plus, I'm talking about cartoons, not animation. There is a big difference.(Final Fantasy is animation, Lion King is a cartoon) And one thing that I think you will agree on. If you watch a Disney movie from the 60's and one from the 90's...the one from the 90's lost a bit in detailing..Why do you think that is? Was is easier to make thousand of sketches on paper and animate like that? Even movement is more mechanical now (again, I mean cartoons, not animations because there the main worry is lip sinc and things like that)

I grew up with a lot of the 90's cartoons, like Tiny Toons, Rocko's Modern Life, Rugrats, Duck Tales, Angry Beavers and Recess. Ed, Edd and Eddy was around that time, too, but I didn;t really like it. I do think the Simpsons is going downhill, and Southpark seems more satirical than it was when it first came out? But I love Family Guy. :D

Actually The Simpsons are apreaciated for the humor and Southpark exactly for its satirical theme. And as I said, they are trying to loose the excess baggage and leave the message of their creations in its bare form. That I do understand, but i, for one can't go pass the aspect in cartoons. That's why, about the series mentioned above...I have fun listening to them not actually watching them.
