My life changed for me when my niece Myca Jean was born on May 9, 2009. My sister who tried so hard, still delivered normally. Most doctors would immediately recommend getting a C-section, but her obstetrician was very patient in coaching her to push. The first months of Myca's life, she slept in an entirely different time zone. While most adults sleep like clockwork, she has an entirely different system. Asleep during the day and fully awake at night. Yet despite the difficulties, just one look at her adorable face and I feel all my problems dissolving. While I was prioritizing the things I will do for her, it has helped me to realize that in my life, I have to put everything in order first. Myca's arrival in our lives has pushed me to get to know myself better. On November 7, 2009, I finally decided to take up my Master's Degree in Nursing, major in Academic Management. To tell you the truth, I was really out of my wits at first, fearing that I may not be able to pass my requirements. I was not the same person 10 years ago. It's different once you've crossed the 30ish age. The energy levels are way different. My age next year will no longer be seen in the calendar, but I am still hopeful that I get to see my age in a thermometer scale.
Here are the things that I did to pack my bags and take my Myca-inspired trek:
1) Find someone or something that truly inspires you
Aside from my niece, here are some people who inspire me to be better like Mother Teresa's endless quest to help the poor and the sick in their life, former Senator Benigno Aquino who says that "The Filipino is worth dying for", ended up dead in the tarmac of the Manila International Airport when he decided to go home to the Philippines. My mom inspires me to better also and gives me advice from time to time on how to live life.
2) Take action
Rhonda Byrne's "The Secret" states that "Don't second guess. Don't delay.Act upon it". When deep in my soul I longed to teach, I had to follow the promptings of my heart and went to take my Masters. It is a long way to go but I know I am fulfilling a goal
3)Prepare a list of things that you will need for the journey
It never fails to be prepared. You may need to have Plan A, B, C and so on and so forth. But nevertheless, people are multifaceted so along the way, you may discover your true talent, the one that has stared you in the face so long yet you did not see.
4)Watching inspirational books and movies
I am a fan of inspirational and self help materials."The Secret", "Leadership and the One Minute Manager", "Personality Plus" and "Purpose Driven Life" are among my favorite books. I have also watched the DVD version of "The Secret" as well. These materials create the positive drive inside you so that you don't lose track of your main life purpose.
5)Thinking positive,stop complaining
Sometimes, when things don't go my way, my tendency is to whine, asking myself where I failed. But now, if it doesn't go my way at all, I say to myself, "Gee this did not work out. There may be something else for me to look at". That way, I won't be stuck and I can move on to the next task.
6)Reach out to others
Walk the extra mile.In graduate school, I try my best to help others in any way possible. If they need advice, I would give it as long as they ask first. Like when a friend was having a problem writing her paper for their Foundations of Education class. I did my best to help her out by giving her ideas to write her paper better.
7)Never give up
I am currently studying Japanese and they would say "Akiramenaide", which means to not give up.The hardest part in all this is when things seem to become difficult or there are difficult people or circumstances. The overbearing teacher who does not listen to the students, an annoying classmate, a spouse who never closes the toothpaste afterwards, heavy traffic, the Algebra and Calculus exams and other similar situations. The initial response is to usually give up. But it is an even greater virtue to hang on to the end.
There are still things that I need to do. I am still carving my niche in life. I will be making my way towards my goal in life which is to become the best teacher who helps others be better. As the Japanese would say "Ganbatte kudasai" meaning to do my best. I am getting there. I am a work in progress. A diamond in the rough. If you have other tips on how to live a purpose filled life, please let me know. Thanks
