hOW important is the COMPREHENSIVE exams in master's degree studies?

i am about to finish my master's degree this semester, however, to test if we really know our forte well we have to thoroughly and comprehensively answer questions related to the major subjects we have taken. once you pass this exam, you are confident that you are equipped to pursue doctoral studies if you want to. however, comprehensive exam is really comprehensive and you have to do it well. that is how important is the comprehensive. now are this necessary? i think so. what about you? do you think it is necessary?
