TajMahal Was built by????

I am from the Philippines and our history classes here teach us that it's indeed Shah Jahan who ordered it to be built for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It would really be a shock if that supposed "fact" would be debunked. I also have an Indian friend and he told me a trivia that Shah Jahan ordered to cut the hands of all the architects and builders of Taj mahal because he didn't want them to build another structure like it. It was never mentioned in our history books here but what he said made me believe that there are really a lot of underlying issue on the construction of the great Taj Mahal..I really am very curious..
