I am a car nut. Scratch that, I am an anything with a motor nut. I recently had the pleasure of driving Porsches' idea of a SUV, the Cayenne GTS. Top to bottom this 100,000 dollar grocery getter is clean. The fit and finish is impossibly delicious and anyone that has the pleasure of sitting in one is "wowed". This is all pre-ignition folks. There are more buttons than the eye can register in the first three go rounds. But onto my passion, the function. The 400 plus horse normally aspirated v8 is docile and somewhat relaxing at idle. Thats where the beauty comes in. There is no frantic clutch input, no silly buttons to contend with, just humble horsepower. A little too humble in fact. This is a Porsche, right? Indeed it is, lower your stance with the console mounted selector, press the SPORT button, and find someone a your nearest red light to embarrass. Its that simple, and yet its so much fun you can't resist. The traction is never questioned due to the awesome all-wheel drive, and the numbers on the tach swing wildly, yet the cabin is quiet and refined. The wail of that same v8 is hair tightening. Mustangs Camaro's and rice rockets beware, this "soccer mom" will kick balls for sure. At 150 mph not much changes except for the tunnel vision. And at those speeds one is left to ponder braking ability. A light pressure on that big left peddle will put some worries away, while arising some new unfamiliar questions. Like "are these seat welded to the chassis?", you sure would hope so. The only thing more impressive than the wolf in sheep clothes look, is the fact that you have a windshield eject button to anyone unfortunate enough to buckle up. Seriously, do not, I repeat DO NOT mash the brakes unless your positive ALL passengers are securely buckled. The brakes are so responsive you have to keep remind yourself that it is an SUV. All and all next to the impeccable service at the dealership this rendition of an SUV is the most interesting I have ever driven. If you have the 100,000 and some local red lights you frequent this is definitely the SUV for you.
