How Do Cats Always Know...

...when they are about to jump into a dangerous situation, and they do it anyway?Tonight my husband and I were having a chocolate fondu. We had our forks in our hand, and we were about to dip our fruit into the flaming bowl of melted chocolate (well not exactly flaming, the bowl was in its stand over a lit tea-light), and the silly cat decides to try and jump over our forks, inbetween us, and see what was in the bowl. Now we had sharp forks, over a bowl with a flame under it, the bowl was sitting on an upside down bucket since we don't have a coffee table, and we're both almost blind. Hubby and I had to be quite firm with kitty, and he knew he'd been a bad boy. Seriously, if he didn't just try to jump into our fondue pot, we woudln't have had to yell at him! lol Do what dangerous situations do your cats get themselves into?

Cats are attracted to things that give off heat. They have been known to hang around open flames just because of the heat it produces. It is not known if they are aware of the sharp dangers knives forks and other eating emplments provide. They think them mearly obsticals and don't often realize the danger they pose.

You might be onto something. Our cat loves to sprawl out infront of the big space heater. Maybe we need to put it on the other side of the room, next time we wantt to have a fondue. LOL The heater is bigger than the flame under the fondue pot, so that just might work.

my cat likes to climb in high places and open cupboards. he used to climb the blinds a lot until i bought him a 6 ft cat tree. now, i retired from the blinds and refrigerator. occasionally, he still sits on the bookshelves.

usually it's just a matter of them jumping up and missing the target and giving us the "I meant to do that" look. One night Oreo was sleeping on the window sill. We were asleep and there was a THUD. Went into the bathroom and there he was on the floor with a really stunned look on his face. Poor guy must have fallen off in his sleep. Other than that, they eat things (plastic, styrofoam) that aren't good for them.

Hi there Danish Canadian. I don't know what was in your kitty's head, because sanity doesn't seam to be it : My first kitty did something "interesting" as well. He liked to jump in the bath tub from time to time to explore it, but this one time, when my dad was about to go take a bath, the smart kitty decided to jump in the bath, only it was full of water, so he instantly jumped out as well You should have seen his wet pissed face after that

It is called instinct. They don't go in if they feel nervous about it. They are stealthy and watchful. The big thing about cat is that they are very curious. They will go where most wouldn't because they are so curious and have to check things out just for that reason. Our cats will walk on something teatering and about to fall.

cats take anything if we are careless though we're cutting meat, they never think how risk they are to do dangerous things. They love challenges, and curious about some things. If something is in front of them, they are always looking for what is their favorite. My cats never do dangerous things, they do things like humans: bathing, eating and sleeping. maybe, my cat likes to play with snakes in the backyard.

I would agree with kaylachan that cats' don't know about pointy things, at least until they've impaled something on it a few times and they really aren't good at assuming that one object is pointy that means this object is also pointy... He just wanted to see what was so interesting that you were gathered about it, it is where they get the saying "curiosity killed the cat."

eek! um..my current bunch of cats are actually quite good about not doing the stupid.. but my first six would try to jump up on the stove among other things, you had to keep an eye on them. the grandchild of my first cat got into the suspended drop ceiling one time, and as fast as it took me to get a cup of coffee had fallen through and dislocated his back leg.gotta love unexpected vet bills from nowhere. but thankfully, the vet just had to resocket the leg,no breaks.

I used to have a cat that would play kamikaze under the tires of the car, it was an outside cat. I would be laying on the porch when the cars were parked, as soon as a car would start, or someone would pull in the driveway, out he would come, running right where the tires would go. He never got hit but I always knew that my brakes worked! As much as he did that, he would actually hunker down in the weeds and look for cars before crossing the road, only crossing after it was clear for him to go.

I had a cat once that sensed when i was depressed, i was sitting in the dining room after my sister and my mother had an argument and i was depressed. Then my cat tom came up to me, and it looked like he smiled as he raised his tail and we began to play. I put a glove on as we were playing he bit the hand that had the glove on and he looked at me in a strange way because i can read his facial expression and lol, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Then one time in another state i was sitting in the backyard depressed and i didn't noticed til after a while but this cat was just looking at me, i guess it was wondering what was wrong. Cats are really good at sensing human emotions, especially when the person is sad.

That's a real instinct, isn't it. LOL.. I think cats have this 6th sense or something too. They seem to know if something bad or a trouble brewing. But in the case of your cat, that's something I would be firm about too, ha. Such a cute action there; the way he reacted.
