Why do we have written exam?

Well I have completed my graduation and now doing my Masters but still we have to give written exams as we use to give in schools.
I am sick of reading notes and searching on NET for e-books and reading them.
Basically there should be some other ways to conduct exams because some people might have knowledge but may not be able to write on papers(me & etc) because of there excess knowledge.
Some other options in which we can give exams are Practical Exam, Giving Live project, Presentations, viva, etc..
So what do you think about this? Are you happy penning down exams or would prefer some other way?Also share your unique way here if you have..

I may not like taking exams but they are the only way to accurately assess the knowledge,with repect to the curriculm,of the entire class in a fair manner. I bet that if you gave a classroom a written exam and then a practical exam one would likely get a similar distribution for the same people.

Maybe it would be good for the person to choose what way to do their exam in. If there are different options. The person could choose which way he is best at. The only hard part is that maybe they won't get pushed as much if they get to choose. People do take tests by presentations, don't they? When I was in school I preferred writing exams.

Well I belong to IT background and I have habit of working for hours on computer, but while studying I am not able to sit.

Writing is one of the most fundamental skills. What is the use of knowledge- well I do not know what is your field- well, I am saying with say Engg in mind- there comes a time when my knowledge need be transferred to a document so that anyone with my knowledge or near equivalent is able to comprehend what I have documented and act in the manner of a person who has that knowledge. This sharing and transfer of knowledge is through Writing only. People who possess knowledge but cannot give it a permanent shape in the form of writing are not as useful as those who can. That is why writing is emphasized in Education.
