Life is very hard for my friend this year. He is living in a room where his floor is concrete. he has no bedroom door to his tiny room. He is infested with mice. His roommate eats all of his food. Never replaces any of it either. that is just the beginning. His landlord charges him 500$ a month for that mess. Leaving him 200.00 a month left from his unemployment.
I told him he could stay here for free. He has a room to sleep in and his own tv. How good is that. He feels I have to charge him or he would not feel right. He can't afford to pay me. Plus my rent is paid up to date. I want him to just save his money.
Thanks for your help here.

Hello Sharon
You are certainly a very nice friend to share your home with your friend, i would be happy to be your friend under any circumstances if i knew you in real life. Kudos!
If he really feels you need to charge him, then suggest him that you pay the whole rent, but you share the expenses there is for Electricity and Water, since you would most likely pay the same for heating if he was there or not. But the other bills might increase a little... ;)
Then also it is still your appartment since you pay the full rent.

he said he wants to give me $200.00 a month for now. just till he can save and move out. It's so expensive to find a place. he may be better off staying a while. Thanks for the help it makes a lot of sense.

Your most welcome, and it is a way that will be fair for the both of you i think... Then he feels he contributes to the rent or atleast the expenses you have related to the home which he also will be using now.
