Are incentives always necessary to get things done?

A lot of the business leaders are offering additional incentives to their staff in order to attain their goals. Do they need to do that even with the fact that employees are being regularly paid to do their work? Why is it important?
An example would be the double payment we get from our quality discussions today, December 22, 2009. Do we need to be paid extra in order to post a lot?

I think sometimes we do need a self booster, meaning incentives can motivate employees to work harder besides, if the company can really afford to give, why not.

Personally, I think incentives almost always work to an advantage. It encourages people to work more. It incites people to reach goals. It makes them work efficiently because they need to get the incentives offered. But, in a way, giving incentives all the time might result negatively. Workers may no longer have as much drive or may slacken their work resulting to low production and low efficiency, if incentives were not given.

Hi, Gabs. Earning while enjoying making and answering posts has always been an incentive to us. We had been actively participating in the discussions even without the double payment alert today. This can be gleaned from active senior members as you are, who had been actively here for 4 years or so even without any incentive as today's double payment.
Indeed, this works to both myLot's and the members' advantage. In appreciation for senior members for being with myLot since it started (and a bonus to new ones), members should also be thankful not just for the earnings but for the fun and enjoyment that we all have here.

people are lazy thats just human nature,
just because people get paid a weekly salary doesnt mean that they are driven to hit their goals and the companies goals.
I have my own mlm business and I often run incentives for my downline the last one which is due to end on december 25th is a new car to the person in my downline who generates the most business.
So incentives are a great tool, to stop people becoming lazy and also to push businesses on.

Hi, Benny. Very rightly said, thanks. I know for a fact, too that incentives work to great advantages. I see that most businesses employ this to move forward with the business. Even in a simple business enterprise such as a beauty parlor or salon, I have noticed that they have an incentive scheme. The beauticians, hairdressers, barbers and manicurists are being paid a regular monthly salary. But, aside from that, they get "chips" equivalent to the type of service they bring into and do at the beauty parlor. At the end of the day, the parlor/salon owner exchanges these "chips" with cash. This simple business strategy enabled the parlor/salon workers to actively invite customers to come into their parlor/salon. Aside from doing this and them refraining to be lazy, get "tips" from customers for a service well done.
In this case, incentives work to both the advantage of the salon owner and his workers.

Incentives can lead to more of the work being done than without incentives. That's just simple human nature. People tend to get more done when they know there's an incentive for them do so, where they are not inclined to do as much. Going back to the example of the double payment today, I may post about as much as I may on a normal day depending on my schedule, but there may be times where I would decide to post on a couple more discussions that I may not normally try and contribute in. So yes, incentives can be necessary to help motivate but they are a double edged sword in the sense that people may expect them if they are done too often.

Hi, Megamatt. You have a very good point there. With incentives, people work more. With incentives, people become active and industrious. They are motivated to persevere in their work in order to get the incentives.
When my children were little and were in their elementary years, my way of motivation for them was giving a prize for good test results and good grades. I made a scale of scores and their equivalent prize. It worked. My children got good grades, landed in the top ten of their class and most of all, they developed the habit of diligent study.
It is also true that giving incentives may work to a disadvantage. Workers might not work if incentives are no longer given for periods of time and may always expect to have them always.
