happy Many people are fascinate with genealogy, a curiosity and desire to know where they came from and who their ancestors were.

What of you? Do you know anything about your heritage or your ancestors? Share a few (or many) of the things you know about your ancestors.

My list:

I am of English, German, and French Canadian ancestory--I married a man of european and native american heritage, hence my children and grandchildren have that and Irish thrown into their mix so far

Some of the professions/roles held by my ancestors: baker, preacher, homemakers, business owners, factory workers, teachers, farmers

My family is now mainly in the US, and spread out all over this country

Many of my ancestors from Europe originally settled in America's east coast and mid-western areas and branched out from there

Please share something about your own heritage. Thank you :)

Hi peacefulwmn9, I cant say much of our ancestors. I have always wondered why we looked a bit different from other people out here. Quite recently I learnt that ours is a warrior community that actually hails from the kingdom called Kalinga which Ashoka the great massacred. Kalinga was peaceful nation believing in love and kindness. Most were Buddhists. When Ashoka the emperor came with his large army for war, people sent away a few able women and children in all different direction to keep the race alive, and the remaining fought the war till they died. Ashoka's soldiers caught many of these women and children and had them also killed. Very few who reached south survived. Within our group we again spread over different villages adopting the names of villages. Most of it is what I learnt from wikipedia. :) But it was fascinating no doubt. :)

happy Hi Vandana.

You have a very fascinating and detailed heritage. And thank you for mentioning wikipedia. I hadn't thought about using that as a resource for ancestory research, until now.

I am very interested in genealogy and my ancestros, but I do not know much about them =( I am Middle Eastern and now that I live in the US, it's hard to find out a lot of information, because I do not have much relatives here. I have heard I have ancestors from Albania or Turkey, I'm not sure which, maybe both. I also heard I have ancestors who were royalty which I thought was pretty awesome =D I love how people are so mixed, it makes everyone soo interesting.

happy Hi Jk.

It would be harder to trace your ancestory having moved to a new country, but perhaps that is where the internet can be of some help to you. Yes, it would indeed be awesome to learn that there is royalty somewhere in your background :))

Hello Karen, I am not 100% sure on my ancestry as my mother was an only child out of a family of 12 kids. my grandmother was married twice and in between those two marriages hooked up with my mother father and only had my mother. My mother knows who here dad was but he passed before she had the chance to know him and there are no other living relatives. My grandfather was brought up in a foster home and while he grew up with one last name and was then given another that his children and my grandmother took as their own. My mother on the other hand was given the last name of my grandmothers first husband and first 7 children. My grandfather that was in the foster care was Polish and my grandmother was German and then from what we have been told by word of mouth my mothers biological father was Irish so it seems that we have some Irish and German in me but other than that I can't say as I do not know my fathers side...

myLot reputation of 100/100. PeacefulWmn9 (3480)   ranked 57 out of 5,024 in family  3 years ago

happy Hi Froggies :)

The history you do know in itself is fascinating, though...how "lost" your parents' family information became due to marriage and remarriage, death, and foster homes. People survive some amazing things and come together to create a family in amazing ways.

It is at least something to know about the Polish, German, and Irish parts of yourself :)

Take care, dear.

happy Hi, Karen, interesting to read about your ancestory. I know the history of our ancestors upto 4 generations back. We belong to South Indian Hindu Nair caste. Our large joint family broke into nuclear families some 35 years back. We don't have a mixed heritage.happy There were many lawyers, writers and artists in the elder generations. New generation all technically educated, engineers and doctors, many settled in the US and gulf countries. We have a family get together once in an year, when many get a chance to meet. There is a lot of unity in our family relations.thumbup

happy Hello Tingtong.

It is wonderful to know of your heritage 4 generations back and of what kind of work and careers your people took on. For instance, I love to paint with oils, and so did my grandmother. For that reasons and others based on research and scientific information, we know that many genetic traits, talents, and such are passed on from generation to generation.

How wonderful that your family experiences great unity and gathers together once a year. It is a beautiful thing.

Over the years, I have learned quite a bit about my ancestry, but there is still so much that I want to know. It seems like the more I learn, the more I want to learn. I haven't learned as much about my mom's ancestry as I have my dad's. Her dad was of African desent while her mom was Native American. My dad was Creole (French, African and Native American) . Both of his parents were children brought to America from Southern France.

myLot reputation of 100/100. PeacefulWmn9 (3480)   ranked 57 out of 5,024 in family  3 years ago

happy Hello Clarkbody.

This is how it is for so many of us: the more we learn, the more we yet wish to know :)

You have an interesting heritage. My children's father had Chippewa, also known as Ojibway, and then Blackfoot in his blood, so my own children have a great mixture of many things in them.

I would love to trace it all back and have more details. Maybe someday! Thank you for sharing what you know of your own ancestory.

In my culture we have tribes and from these tribes we are divided into clans. Each clan has a name and a clan praise. From the clan praise we are able to gather the names of our ancestors, the verly old ones. What this essentially does, it identifies all the descendants, for example if I had to come to America and meet someone with the same clan name as mine, even though I've never seen the person, that person is family and that means " no intimate relationship". We always take the clan praise of the fathers side.
From my mother's side my great great grandmother was white but i'm not sure if she was dutch or not. I'm assuming dutch because dutch people are the ones that settled close where they lived. I am still perplexed about how she managed to do this, get married to a black man in south africa when racism was still ripe. I have never met her side of the family and i assume she was disowned. We dont have her photos but part of her complexion is still lives on till the 3rd generation.

myLot reputation of 100/100. PeacefulWmn9 (3480)   ranked 57 out of 5,024 in family  3 years ago

happy Hi Pumeza.

That is fascinating that if you came here, you would know a relative by his or her clan praise. And yes, I imagine your grandmother would have been disowned, which is a shame. Racism has always been a complete mystery and sadness to me, as we are all of God's "human" race, when you get to the very bottom of things.

Thank you for sharing how ancestory is worked out for you. Interesting, to say the least!

My husband and I are genealogists, we not only do our families but others also. It's wonderful to find out where you came from and some of the things your families went through. It's also very important to write your memories for the sake of your children and their children. I wish I had more of mine. Part of my family were German Jews and they are all just wiped from the earth if part of that family had not come to the US around the time of the Civil War, I would no nothing before my Dad and his father. The other side of my family came before the Country was born and I have most of their history. But warning, genealogy has become so profitable that many scams abound. My family even passed many of these tales off as truth, it wasn't until I did the research and found the dates just didn't match that I was able to separate truth for fiction.

happy Hello Pat. What interesting work you and your husband do! My father's family tree book was given to me upon his death, and I cherished what it held. When most of my things were stolen from storage during this move I've made, it was in the cedar chest...one of the items stolen.

I need to find a relative who has a copy, and yes, writing down what we know of our heritage is so vital. My children all know of their ancestory back as far as I do. I've kept journals since I was a teen, and those were also in the cedar chest, so I've begun from scratch for the past four years recreating what I know and remember of so many things!

Again, I admire what you and your hubby do. I've looked into online resources, but am not sure which are legitimate and which want only the money. I do so miss that family tree book! His mother is where I get my own German heritage.

Thank you.

Karen

Ancestry is the one we use, but even there much information if obtain by undocumented sources so you have to be careful. The Census which are available are a great help and soon they will release the 1940 ones. From Census you can find an individual and the location of their home, and who their neighbors were.
Ancestry is a great help here because they have cross referenced all the census
information. So if you are looking for John Smith you will get a listing of every John Smith in that's year's Census. Of course the more information you have the easier it is to find the one you want. Many of our public Libraries have Heritage Quest which is available on line free to library members and that will give you all Census available.

My surname is a Viking name. The part of England where I grew up has towns and villages all with Viking suffixes on the end of their names. So when I was working in Norway a couple of years back it must be no surprise that I felt very much at home!

I am the only member of my family to have left the UK, and the only one to have married a foreign national. My sister moved to the South of England after she got married, and she and her grown-up offspring all live near London (not where I would want to be). Most of the rest of the family have stayed where they have been for centuries.

And as I have no children of my own, and none of my sister's adult children seem set on having families, the seed will not spread very far for the foreseeable future.

myLot reputation of 100/100. PeacefulWmn9 (3480)   ranked 57 out of 5,024 in family  3 years ago

happy Hello Astonysh.

I remember learning some things about the Vikings in school history classes. I am sorry that your seed will not spread very far, but there may be others, relatives not known to you to keep the "family" going.

THank you for responding!
