What would you do if you had to chose...?

... your cat or your home?Strange question I know, but here is the story behind it.
George and I are on section 8 housing assistince. Every year they have to inspect our home to make sure it meets their exacting standards. In the past we've had problems and have been Re-inspected, and usually passed within the second atempt, if not the first. However, George and I have three cats as well. And, every year we haven't had a problem.
But this year....
We failed our inspection, and apparently it's suvere enough to where the program will drop me because of the state of our home. (it's a one-bed appartment). The problems listed all have to do with our cats-- well one cat in particular-- Precious. He is not declawed because he is too old to get declawed without it having negitive effects, and claws or no claws is not a valid enough reason for me to do what it takes to have him declawed even though Bandfield would (for an arm and a leg price), but his safty is more important to me.
Well he scratched on wood trimmings around our doorframes and helped point out, by use of his claws, just how warn the wood of our bedroom door is. So now we have to have it all fixed by new years eve.
Our complex is being real stupid about this and giving conterdictary statments. Saying they don't see the point in fixing the damages until we move. (if we move) but reluctently agree because of my section 8contract. Though Cindy is rightly concerned this may happen again as long as we have the cat in question.
But that's not what urks me. She said if we didn't get rid of him, we couldn't live here. Though she seemed somewhat agreeable after she found out we paid our pet deposit when we moved in. But, the last time George went to talk to her she stressed that to stop the problem complete we would have to give up the cat.
So when our lease ends, I don't know what's going to happen. I'm not giving him up. And, I did his nails trimmed.
So, if you were forced to chose.... could you make such a decision?

Nope, I would not give up my cat.. I would go to the news maybe, see if they can do a "piece" on the ridiculousness of the situation.
I think the complex was right. why repair it until you move.. Is it that bad that the whole structure is going to collapse because of some worn door frames.. Ridiculous.
Another suggestion to you.. I have seen in magazines that they sell these door jamb protectors just for this purpose- they are like clear plastic that yo nail over the door frame and it prevents and discourages the cats from clawing.. maybe you can purchase these and show the complex that you will put them up so that the wood will not be ruined again..
I think I have seen them in catalogs like Carol Wright and other things like that that sell novelty items.
I don't agree with declawing either- especially in an older cat.
Good luck.

I have heard of things like that. However, we don't have all that much money and those aren't very cheep. Hopefully sometime next week the repairs will be completed. But with it being christmas eve no one is going to do anything. The office is closed so nothing will be done until monday (that is if the water main problem is ever resolved) Though the complex is trying to move the re-inspection ahead. However, it won't grant them much more time. The re-inspection must be completed by the tenth of January. In order to have their paper work ready and enough time to give a proper 30-day notice of eaither decision on weather or not we keep our aid.
If we lose our aid, then George, myself, and the cats will be forced to move to a low-cost appartment were we can afford full rent. Its to high here.

That is outrageous! In fact... i can even be classified as animal discrimmination! They should respect the elderly... even if it IS a cat. I'm glad you're not giving up the cat =)
