hi vycess, in China, lunar new year is the biggest festival. and we would definitely make noises with fireworks. when i was a child, i look forward lunar new year in every year. i look forward the beautiful fireworks and firecracks. since i am an adult now, i do not like these noises, it made me so unhappy, and i always afraid of being hurt by those fireworks.

Yes I noticed that china really has some festival like that. Fireworks are beautiful to watch and I love them too. But we are aware that they are dangerous, Maybe it should be operated or fired carefully by experts. I can't imagine the new year without fireworks.

It's a Chinese tradition meant to drive evil spirits away. The Chinese believe that as the new year enters, good and bad fortunes are also waiting in the wings to enter. But if you make loud noises, evil spirits won't be inclined to hang around. This is mainly why fireworks and firecrackers were invented in China centuries ago, to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. Early Chinese traders who settled in other Asian countries like the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia brought those practices with them and so it also influenced the culture of those countries where they settled. And so eventhough the Philippines is largely a Catholic nation, during Christmas and New Year's celebrations we still practice things that are Chinese in origin - like the use of firecrackers and fireworks and generally making a loud raucous.

Very informative response. Yes, Here in Philippines we really celebrate new year with fireworks and fire crackers. Now, it's clear that it is believed to drive evil spirits... Happy new year to you :)

To ward off bad spirits. That's what they say. LOL

As for me, a quiet night with my loved ones would make new year a blast.

It is the sound of rejoicement, happiness, and welcoming the new year. People make noise generally when they are happy and this is one of such happiness.

Some people believe that the Chinese were the first to start celebrating the New Year. And some others believe it was the ancient Germans, and still others claim it was the Romans. We know that the Chinese have always had a great festival at the time of their New Year, which comes later than ours. The Chinese New Year festivals last several days. The ancient Germans established a New Year festival because of the changing seasons. The German winter began about the middle of November. This was the time when they gathered the harvest.
Because everybody came together at this time for the happy occasion, and because it meant they would have a period of rest from work afterwards, they would make merry and have a great holiday. Even though it was only November, they considered it the beginning of a new year! When the Romans conquered Europe, they changed this time of celebration to the first of January. For them, the coming of the New Year was a symbol of starting up a new life with new hope for the future. This custom and this meaning have lasted to this day. We greet the New Year happily, hoping it will bring us a good, new life.happy
