hello keely, I want you can try photoshop, it is very nice and can you satisfactory result when it come to photo editing. their is also Picasa from google its freeware, it is capable of editing photo not much to choose from though but its very useful for beginners.Slide slow maker, Don't you like the Microsoft power point?. it easy to use in making slide show.

There are many Photo Editing Software out there, some are free some cost a little, and some cost a lot.

For photo editing, i personally prefer GIMP it's under the GPL (General Public License) so it doesn't cost anything, it is the most powerful free Photo Editing software out there.

For Flyers, Calendars, Posters and others
i'd recommend using CorelDraw , it is a vector editing program which is easy to learn and use.

For "gadgets" (widgets) id recommend Deskhedron, it is very useful if you want multiple desktops, u just press CTRL+SHIFT+Z and presto, you can browse through all your desktops. And the best part is , it's free!

i'd also recommend T3 desk, it's free and every time you right click on the minimize button of a window it minimizes the window but in a very cool way!

I think as you must be new to computer software, you cant understand tit-bits of high end softwares like photoshop and pagemaker.
for you i would suggest giving gimp a try when it comes to image editing.
flyer maker, calendar maker, card maker ..you can do all these with microsoft office 2007 and 2010
for slideshow, try the windows movie maker. you can add slides, add effects, transitions and new fresh looks to your movies

a good photo editing software is adobe photo-shop. you can create flyer maker through Microsoft office publisher or Microsoft word even. and for creating slide shows we can use microsoft powerpoint
