"Let the pony have his head" - Celebrating Australia Day - 26th January | | | | "The Man from Snowy River" is possibly one of the best known Aussie poems, written by AB “Banjo” Paterson 1864-1941. I find this poem very rich in lessons for all of us. A bit of background for the poem, to whet your appetite: A colt, the offspring of a champion and worth a small fortune, had escaped and gone off with the wild horses. All the top horsemen gathered to retrieve the colt, including Clancy of the Overflow - the BEST horseman who ever held reins. Along with the other champion riders, comes a man from Snowy River, on a “weed” of a pony. He is ridiculed and told this is not a job for him, but Clancy speaks up for him and he rides. Clancy leads the chase, but the wild horses beat them to the mountains and we see all the riders gathered on the crest - “When they reached the mountain's summit, even Clancy took a pull, It well might make the boldest hold their breath” Even Clancy - the champion - pulled back on the reins. No one could make that descent! Fear overtook them all. They were ready to give up. “But the man from Snowy River LET THE PONY HAVE HIS HEAD, And he swung his stockwhip round and gave a cheer, And he raced him down the mountain like a torrent down its bed, While the OTHERS stood and watched in very FEAR” I hope you enjoy this poem as much as we Aussies do and I hope you can relate to it the way I do. Here we have “experts” looking at the difficulties, being fearful, and being stopped in their tracks because of their fear. THEY couldn’t do it. Then we have one person who “let the pony have his head”. We see he “never shifted in his seat”. He didn’t try to steer the horse over the obstacles or round the pot holes. He let the pony be in charge and run his own course. He succeeded. I am sure all of us can relate to times we have faced difficulties and what may have seemed an insurmountable obstacle. We have listened to the knockers. We have been paralysed with fear and stopped from acting. Yet I believe that within each of us there are untapped resources, which, if put into action, will take us beyond our imaginations. How do you face obstacles? Do you shrink in fear? Do you listen to the scoffers who say it can't be done? Or do you tackle the job and win? Share your experiences. Read about the man from Snowy River and be inspired. Did you see the movie? What were your impressions? THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around That the colt from old Regret had got away, And had joined the wild bush horses - he was worth a thousand pound, So all the cracks had gathered to the fray. All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far Had mustered at the homestead overnight, For the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are, And the stockhorse snuffs the battle with delight. There was Harrison, who made his pile when Pardon won the cup, The old man with his hair as white as snow; But few could ride beside him when his blood was fairly up - He would go wherever horse and man could go. And Clancy of the Overflow came down to lend a hand, No better horseman ever held the reins; For never horse could throw him while the saddle girths would stand, He learnt to ride while droving on the plains. And one was there, a stripling on a small and weedy beast, He was something like a racehorse undersized, With a touch of Timor pony - three parts thoroughbred at least - And such as are by mountain horsemen prized. He was hard and tough and wiry - just the sort that won't say die - There was courage in his quick impatient tread; And he bore the badge of gameness in his bright and fiery eye, And the proud and lofty carriage of his head. But still so slight and weedy, one would doubt his power to stay, And the old man said, "That horse will never do For a long n tiring gallop - lad, you'd better stop away, Those hills are far too rough for such as you." So he waited sad and wistful - only Clancy stood his friend - "I think we ought to let him come," he said; "I warrant he'll be with us when he's wanted at the end, For both his horse and he are mountain bred. "He hails from Snowy River, up by Kosciusko's side, Where the hills are twice as steep and twice as rough, Where a horse's hoofs strike firelight from the flint stones every stride, The man that holds his own is good enough. And the Snowy River riders on the mountains make their home, Where the river runs those giant hills between; I have seen full many horsemen since I first commenced to roam, But nowhere yet such horsemen have I seen." So he went - they found the horses by the big mimosa clump - They raced away towards the mountain's brow, And the old man gave his orders, "Boys, go at them from the jump, No use to try for fancy riding now. And, Clancy, you must wheel them, try and wheel them to the right. Ride boldly, lad, and never fear the spills, For never yet was rider that could keep the mob in sight, If once they gain the shelter of those hills." So Clancy rode to wheel them - he was racing on the wing Where the best and boldest riders take their place, And he raced his stockhorse past them, and he made the ranges ring With the stockwhip, as he met them face to face. Then they halted for a moment, while he swung the dreaded lash, But they saw their well-loved mountain full in view, And they charged beneath the stockwhip with a sharp and sudden dash, And off into the mountain scrub they flew. Then fast the horsemen followed, where the gorges deep and black Resounded to the thunder of their tread, And the stockwhips woke the echoes, and they fiercely answered back From cliffs and crags that beetled overhead. And upward, ever upward, the wild horses held their way, Where mountain ash and kurrajong grew wide; And the old man muttered fiercely, "We may bid the mob good day, No man can hold them down the other side." When they reached the mountain's summit, even Clancy took a pull, It well might make the boldest hold their breath, The wild hop scrub grew thickly, and the hidden ground was full Of wombat holes, and any slip was death. But the man from Snowy River let the pony have his head, And he swung his stockwhip round and gave a cheer, And he raced him down the mountain like a torrent down its bed, While the others stood and watched in very fear. He sent the flint stones flying, but the pony kept his feet, He cleared the fallen timber in his stride, And the man from Snowy River never shifted in his seat - It was grand to see that mountain horseman ride. Through the stringybarks and saplings, on the rough and broken ground, Down the hillside at a racing pace he went; And he never drew the bridle till he landed safe and sound, At the bottom of that terrible descent. He was right among the horses as they climbed the further hill, And the watchers on the mountain standing mute, Saw him ply the stockwhip fiercely, he was right among them still, As he raced across the clearing in pursuit. Then they lost him for a moment, where two mountain gullies met In the ranges, but a final glimpse reveals On a dim and distant hillside the wild horses racing yet, With the man from Snowy River at their heels. And he ran them single-handed till their sides were white with foam. He followed like a bloodhound on their track, Till they halted cowed and beaten, then he turned their heads for home, And alone and unassisted brought them back. But his hardy mountain pony he could scarcely raise a trot, He was blood from hip to shoulder from the spur; But his pluck was still undaunted, and his courage fiery hot, For never yet was mountain horse a cur. And down by Kosciusko, where the pine-clad ridges raise Their torn and rugged battlements on high, Where the air is clear as crystal, and the white stars fairly blaze At midnight in the cold and frosty sky, And where around The Overflow the reed beds sweep and sway To the breezes, and the rolling plains are wide, The man from Snowy River is a household word today, And the stockmen tell the story of his ride. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | RawBill I picked Gerkins up at Dargo some years back, Thats the doorway to the high Country. The Cattle men should still be there,They were there for over 150 years then the Greenies gave their useless gut full to us and Gutless Government went with them. Then we would not have all then heavy bushfires through there. We never had the fires there when the Cattle were there and there was no damage to the bush, Only from those weekenders from the city on their bikes and 4x4 monsters. And dumb greenies getting lost. Dont start me on that. Im for "Bring the Cattle back to the high lands" HICCUP/ | | | | cloudwatcher (4168)

| | FOOT NOTE to all this..... If you want to see a true Blue Aussie Movie get this out. The Man from Snowy River. The Horse race down the hills is the best you will see anywhere in the World bar none. The Action was slowed down as it was to fast on film, If you think its fast on the film, then gear it up a few notches as that's how fast those Horsemen came down the hills on horseback, (OH by the way these are no stunt men, they are the Men from Snowy Mountains and this is there everyday job. That's how good they are bar none. I love up there its about 2 hours away from me where I live. HICCUP/ | | | | | | | cloudwatcher (4168)

| | I didn't know it was a poem. I just saw the two movies, The Man From Snowy River and Return to Snowy River. Those two movies ignited a long affection my sister had for Sigrid Thornton. My whole family liked the movies. I learn something new every day. I really like the poem, so thank you for posting it. | | | | | | | cloudwatcher (4168)

| | Hi CW,Great Poem. I remember seeing the movie many years ago. As I read the poem the personality who played the Man from Snowy River loomed in front of my imagination and I relived the entire scene. Apt illustration that you offered. My entire life has been one of giving the reins over. Having spent most of my life alone, losing parental care when young as well as being separated from my siblings, experiencing divorces within the first year of marriage and going on to raising two children alone created many challenges and obstacles. Those I met along the way tell me I am a marvel and a wonder to them, some even saying I am their hero. I always tell them it is not I, but the guidance of the Universal Creator receive. The direction and aid that is available for all of us if we let go the reins and avail ourselves of the prodding. For example, this year I wanted so badly to get out of the frigid, cold climate of Kansas and move to a warmer climate, one that would not be so harsh and treacherous. I put off making a move because I could not decide where would be the best place to go and for once in my life I was letting my possessions hold me back (the comforts of old age). I chose finally to let go the possessions and headed out to San Diego, CA where the climate is warm. Immediately upon arriving in CA, I knew I was not happy there. Work was scarce, pay scale was terrible, cost of living was extremely high meaning I had to live in a roommate arrangement, and the freeways were extremely nerve racking. For three months I let my disappointment be know in silent communication to the Father and pleaded for a destination that would not be too far in distance (I had just traveled thousands of miles across country in an old car) that would be suitable and provide work. The end result is I am now in Arizona, 7 hours away from CA, have a beautiful apartment that is affordable and my business is growing. The climate, although having four seasons is temperate and the winters stay mild. It is rural living, no horrendous freeways and it all just fell into place. Within a few months the place was completely furnished. Friends continually want to credit me and are amazed at what I accomplished. I know and tell them it is not me but the blessings I receive because I avail myself in full knowledge of needing the guidance and aid from the Universal Creator. In essence, I let him have the reins. The only credit I would deserve is in tapping into the universal consciousness that leads us to our desires and empowers us to overcome obstacle and achieve our goals. | | | | | | | cloudwatcher (4168)

| | Thanks D. Even though I know your story it was an inspiration to read it. I understand completely what you are saying but I also acknowledge that you are a positive person who took charge, followed the leads and met the challenges head on. For a Christian, the words "let the pony have his head" have a special meaning. So often I am called on to do something I KNOW I cannot do, but when I "let the pony have his head" - or let the Holy Spirit take control, He enables me to accomplish. The stockman "never shifted in his seat" which means that he never tried to control the horse. When self gets out of the way, great things can be accomplished. Thank you for sharing how you let the pony have his head and never shifted in your seat. You ARE an inspiration. | | | | | | | Free full text sermons Full text sermons, outlines, and Bible studies. www.praisethesavior.org | add comment | | | |

| | Hi Cloud! What a great epic poem by Banjo Paterson! I've never read the entire thing until now. The Aussie's should be proud of Clancy! I saw the first film--The Man from Snowy River, but haven't seen the second one. I liked the first one, but frankly spent so much time enjoying the scenery that I feel I missed some other good parts. I need to see it again. :-) I don't believe in coincidences and so, I feel I was meant to read your words today. I've been perturbed by some actions of my government lately and have been feeling annoyed about that--and reading some reactions here that make me feel a bit hopeless. "There is nothing to fear, but fear itself" is a famous quote by our American president--Franklin Roosevelt. This poem is a great illustration of that point. Fear is what holds us back from taking chances, essentially crippling ourselves from taking the next step. I have certainly had many points in my life where my own fear caused more problems for me than any of the chances I might have taken could have. You know about some of them. Only when I have "given the horse his head"--put my faith in God's hands and made the plunge, have I ever had success. Surprisingly, I still need to remind myself of that now and then, even though I know it's true. And so, I will write some letters and make some comments regarding my hopes that there will be some positive changes made by my government. That's the only thing I have any control over. Then I will give the horse his head, once again. You chose a wonderful way to pay tribute for Australia Day--I hope you enjoy the holiday! xo | | | | | | | cloudwatcher (4168)

| | Well Holly, if any letters to politicians have any influence (and I know they do) YOURS will certainly draw attention. You have a real gift in that area. I know you will express your thoughts in such a way that they will hit home and cause them to at least consider the issues. Your words usually have a big effect on me. Yes, I know of times when you've known the truths of letting go and letting God, and no, it isn't a surprise that we so often need reminders. My first reaction is always "I can't do that!" even though experience has taught me so many times that nothing is impossible when God is in control. | | | | nyhollyjean (2254)

| | It must just be part of the human condition to need to be reminded of that I guess. :-( I want to whack myself in the head when I get like that. lol Thank you for the kind words about my writing. I have to be honest--even though I've been told that before, I don't see it. But, it means a great deal to me to have you think it. :-) | | | | cloudwatcher (4168)

| | Well Holly, when I say something I mean it. I would have to say that of all the people who write here, you present the most logical, clear-cut, easily understandable, interestingly presented, definition of the issue. You ARE a writer!
